| Responsibilities: | 
 
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations 
systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the 
global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development 
of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment 
under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of 
governments and the international community for action.  UNEP's Division
 of Communications and Public Information (DCPI) communicates UNEP's 
core messages to stakeholders and partners, raising environmental 
awareness and enhancing the profile of UNEP worldwide. This post is 
located in UNEP/ DCPI at the Nairobi duty station.   Under the direct 
supervision of the Head, News and Media and the guidance of the Division
 Director, the incumbent will undertake writing tasks that include but 
not limited to press releases, speeches, concept notes and reports. 
 
Responsibilities: 
 
The consultant will work under the direct supervision of the Head of 
News and Media Unit and the guidance of the Division Director UNEP/DCPI,
 and will perform the following: 
 
-Prepare speeches for the Executive Office and senior staff e.g. for 
launches and events such as; the United Nations Environment Assembly 
(UNEA), World Environment Day, Conference of Parties (COP), etc. 
-Prepare talking points for the Executive Director and other senior staff as required 
-Draft press releases on diverse environmental topics including for 
launches of publications, environmental events and expositions 
-Review and provide inputs to UNEP publications and articles as required  
-Draft fact sheets on substantive work of UNEP under the seven sub-programmes of the Programme of Work 
-Prepare other copy/content as required |

QUALIFICATIONS 
 | 
| Education: | 
| At least five (5) years of 
progressively relevant experience in Journalism or other writing/content
 creation profession in the area of environment and sustainability. 
Experience in writing speeches, press releases, concept notes and fact 
sheets as well as  reports on diverse environmental issues is required. 
Qualifying years of experience are calculated following the receipt of 
the first level university degree recognized by the United Nations.  | 
| Work Experience: | 
| Advanced university degree (Master’s 
degree or equivalent) in communications, journalism, marketing, 
international relations, social science or development-related field.  A
 first level university degree in combination with qualifying experience
 may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.  | 
| Languages: | 
| English and French are the working 
languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, 
fluency in oral and written English is required (English preferably 
mother tongue). Knowledge of another UN official language is an 
advantage. | 
| Other Desirable Skills: | 
| Excellent computer skills (Microsoft office, Internet, email) are required. |
