Location: New York/ South Bronx

Reports To: New Roots Program Manager

Hours: 15 hours per week

Start Date: March 2014

Background:

The IRC’s New Roots program in New York was established in 2011 to help newly-arrived refugees, asylees and other immigrant populations in the south Bronx access fresh, affordable and healthy produce, better integrate into their communities, and become more financially self-sufficient.  The New Roots Program in New York currently oversees two urban farms in the south Bronx.

Scope of Work:

The New Roots Urban Farm Intern will help to oversee food production and maintenance of two urban farms located in the south Bronx.  In addition to food production, intern will assist with market activities, client outreach and community organizing as needed. This position reports directly to the New Roots Program Manager and implements activities in coordination with the Farm Coordinator. A minimum commitment of three months and 15 hours a week is required. 
Key Responsibilities: 

Assist with all food production activities;Assist with market day activities: outreach, harvesting, set-up, sales, and clean-up;Assist with site maintenance: composting, clean-up, materials delivery;Coordinate work day activities and support volunteers on site;Assist with farm based training activities; Conduct client outreach and help facilitate weekly field trips;Support community garden members as needed; Assist New Roots Program Manager and Farm Coordinator with program development, implementation, reporting and monitoring as needed.

Learning Objectives:

Intern will be introduced to the work of IRC and more specifically the New Roots program.Intern will gain experience in food production, community gardening and farmers markets in NYC.Through this position, the intern will engage clients and community members in food production.Intern will gain experience with volunteer coordination.

Requirements:

A strong passion for and knowledge of food and farming issuesBachelor’s degree or course work in related field preferredDemonstrated experience with community organizing and engagement, particularly with disadvantaged communities and related to food justice or farming, preferredPrior experience working in urban agriculture or gardening preferredPrior experience working with refugees and immigrant communitiesStrong leadership, communication, and organizational skills requiredA flexible schedule and ability to travel to the Bronx regularly requiredSecond language (Spanish, French, Arabic or Karen) and interpretation skills a plus.

NEW ROOTS GARDENING - INTERN

            Part-time

Background:

Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a leading non sectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection, and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict.  Since 1960, the Miami US Programs Office has resettled more than 10,000 refugees, providing them a fresh start and opportunities to use their greatest resources - their motivation, their skills and their experiences - to become independent and self-sufficient new Americans.  Currently, the office resettles and/or provides assistance to over 1,000 refugees, asylees, and victims of human trafficking per year.

The New Roots program at IRC is an initiative to support nutrition, food security, gardening, enterprise, and production activities within the US network of IRC offices so that resettled refugees are empowered to be self-sufficient and lead healthy lives.  This spring, the IRC in Miami launched its first New Roots Garden in Doral.    As the program develops, the New Roots Gardening intern will assist IRC staff to expand the size and the scope of garden, the growing and maintenance of the garden and serve as a liaison between IRC growers and local community.  The person applying for this internship will be expected to make a six month commitment and keep a reliable, weekly, garden and office visitation schedule.

Key Responsibilities:

§  Collaborate with IRC staff and community to identify participants, partners, materials and plants needed for the maintenance of the community garden;

§  Assist in securing donations of materials and technical advice to support the community garden;

§  Explore opportunities for expansion of New Roots Gardening program through the acquisition of donated vacant lots and/or land;

§  Organize and help facilitate community meetings to gauge interest and locate refugees to participate in small-scale gardening projects;

§  Keep thorough and accurate records for all growers and community garden activities;

§  Communicate with the Development Manager on individual grower progress and overall urban garden issues;

§  Serve as a liaison between growers and the local community;

§  Oversee general community garden upkeep and maintenance, including helping to assign growing plots, leading composting activities, assisting with workshops, training, coordinating and receiving soil and plant deliveries.

Requirements:

§  Commit to a 6-month internship and 15-20 hours per week in field/office;

§  Experience or demonstrated interest in farming issues; nutrition, gardening, garden design, or food security issues;

§  Ability to communicate and work effectively as a team member in a multicultural environment;

§  Organized with great attention to detail and great flexibility;

§  Strong writing and editing skills, specifically in developing print and visual training materials;

§  Excellent computer skills: MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint;

§  Ability to commit to six months of garden oversight/coordination;

§  Bilingual/bicultural in Spanish/Haitian Creole is highly desirable.
