Volunteer Program Intern

SCOPE OF WORK:

This is an unpaid internship.


The International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Baltimore is a non-profit, non-sectarian refugee resettlement agency dedicated to working together with legally admitted refugees to assist them in rebuilding lives and reuniting families in the greater Baltimore area. A committed staff of professionals and volunteers provide essential resettlement services to refugee families including basic necessities, education, employment, social services and advocacy.

PURPOSE: The Volunteer Program Intern will help the Volunteer Coordinator organize, expand, and promote volunteer and internship opportunities with the IRC in Baltimore.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Recruit, screen, orient and match interns and volunteers with appropriate service opportunities.Maintain individual files on all volunteer and interns staff, ensuring all required documentation is complete, accurate and on file.Record and report all volunteer time and keep accurate, appropriately documented electronic and paper records of service time.Maintain and distribute accurate and up-to-date job descriptions for all volunteer and internship opportunities. Strengthen and grow existing intern and volunteer program by ensuring job descriptions align with staff and client needsRecognize volunteers and their service through events and communications.Respond to volunteer inquiries swiftly and keep volunteers informed about news and events

REQUIREMENTS:

Reliable, flexible, and able to work independently and under pressure in a fast-paced environment.An interest in international and refugee issues.Creativity and initiative to follow through on projects.Strong desire to help people and enthusiasm for working in a multi-cultural setting.Computer literacy – preferably with PC systems.A car/driver’s license is beneficial.Energetic, empathetic, and ready to do a variety of jobs.Willing to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies.Excellent strategic thinking, planning, and organizational skills.Superior writing and editing skills, with strong attention to detail.Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.Knowledge of program design and/or experience in social services delivery.

 TIME COMMITMENT:

Fall and Spring interns are required to work at least 15 hours per week, Monday through Friday, for a minimum of 12 weeks in the Fall and Spring.Summer interns are required to work at least 25 hours per week, Monday through Friday, for the entire summer.

Colombia: Marketing and Public Relations Strategy Volunteer (Habitat for Humanity Colombia)

ASSIGNMENT:

Habitat for Humanity Colombia is looking for a Marketing and Public Relations Strategy Volunteer to boost the profile of Habitat for Humanity Colombia (HFHC) and implement an ongoing strategy that affirms our image, our preferred partners and increases our exposure to our intended market.

The primary objective of this project is to generate an effective strategy for marketing Habitat for Humanity Colombia and strengthening its public relations profile. The project will require an analysis of the existing mechanisms by which the organization interacts with the wider community and targeted partners through the internet, social media and other forms of communications media. The volunteer will assist in developing a comprehensive marketing and communications program that will enhance the organization’s image and position within the marketplace and the general public, and facilitate better external communications.
The project will include:
*Analysis and evaluation of existing marketing and communications processes
*Identify gaps in existing communications exercises
*Ensure articulation of the organization’s desired image and position, assure consistent communication of image and position throughout the organization
*Assist the organization in identifying targeted audiences
*Develop proposals for improved marketing that include mediums for communications as well as regularity
*Advise how to coordinate media interest in the organization and ensure regular contact with target media and appropriate response to media requests
*Manage social media presence, while developing plans to increase visibility and awareness
*Assist in the establishment and implementation of the marketing and public relations plan

The volunteer opportunity will require extensive consultation with HFHC communications and program staff while the level of supervision will be determined according to the level of experience of the candidate. The volunteer opportunity requires reasonably complex problems solving activities, gap identification and proposing appropriate solutions.

Volunteer deliverables and timeline:
*Analysis Report of existing marketing and communications processes (2 weeks)
*Proposed Marketing and Public Relations Plan with Image and Position (5 weeks)

The outcome of this project will be a marketing and public relations strategy for HFHC which will allow it to continually grow its partner and support base into the future. This project also provides the opportunity for the volunteer to develop valuable inter-cultural experience, have contact with the informal settlement communities of Colombia, as well as gain valuable professional experience in the non-government organization (NGO) sector.

OFFICE INFORMATION:

Habitat for Humanity was established in Colombia in 1991, when a teacher from a rural school in Quimbaya, Quindío, became aware of the organization through a magazine article. Three years later, the construction of the first 28 houses began in the Los Cerezos de Quimbaya neighborhood. Habitat for Humanity Colombia strives to become an alternative for low income families, helping families to build and improve their own homes. Habitat Colombia seeks support and partnership from government, the private sector and civil society—especially young people. Habitat for Humanity Colombia has served more than 3,500 families through diverse housing solutions, and granted 2,300 loans for over 4 million dollars. Habitat has also helped more than 1,500 people through training on financial education and healthy housing. More than 20 municipalities and regions have been benefited with Habitat for Humanity Colombia’s projects.

ANTICIPATED HOST ORGANIZATION SUPPORT:
HFH Colombia will provide office space and equipment including laptop and network access.

ANTICIPATED COSTS TO THE VOLUNTEER:
Monthly estimate for a single individual is given below. (All figures are in USD.)

For a rental apartment:
Housing: $400
Utilities: $50
Food: $500
Transportation to and from office: $50
Other (recreation and personal expenses) :$300
Estimated Monthly Total: $1300

DESIRED SKILLS AND EXERIENCE:

*Fluency in either English or Spanish (both an advantage)
*2 year degree minimum required
*Degree in Communications or Marketing
*Project management skills
*Expertise in use of Social Media
*Expertise in verbal and written communication
*Proficiency with MS Office required
*Experience working in a cross-cultural setting preferred

The IRC’s New Roots program in New York was established in 2011 to help newly-arrived refugees, asylees and other immigrant populations in the south Bronx access fresh, affordable and healthy produce, better integrate into their communities, and become more financially self-sufficient.  The New Roots Program provides training and support to newly arrived families on improving and continuing good health.

Scope of Work:

Under the direct supervision of the New Roots Program Manager, and in collaboration with the Education staff, the Nutrition Volunteer will develop lesson plans and conduct trainings about healthy food access, choices and preparation. This volunteer position offers a flexible schedule.

Responsibilities:

Develop and compile nutrition and food access educational materials, Create interactive activities for pre-literate, ESL populations to explore food, markets, healthy choices and preparation techniques,Conduct cooking demonstrations and food and nutrition trainings as needed,Create surveys or questionnaire to determine effectiveness of trainings,Work closely with Food Secure Resettlement Intern and assist with activities as needed, Assist clients as needed with food access and preparation activities,Create a data collection tool to track clients who have received nutrition education.

Requirements:

A strong passion for and knowledge of food and nutrition issues,Bachelor’s degree or course work in related field preferred,Experience developing lesson plans and teaching classes highly preferred,Background in nutrition education or cooking preferred,Demonstrated experience with community organizing and engagement, particularly with disadvantaged communities and related to food justice or health, preferred,Prior experience working with refugees and/or immigrant communities Strong communication, writing, presentation, facilitation and organizational skills required,A flexible schedule,Second language (Spanish, French, Arabic or Karen) and interpretation skills a plus.IRC leading the way from harm to home.

Resettlement Shop Volunteer

SCOPE OF WORK:

This is an unpaid volunteer position.

The International Rescue Committee of Baltimore is a non-profit, non-sectarian refugee resettlement agency dedicated to working together with legally admitted refugees to assist them in rebuilding lives and reuniting families in the greater Baltimore area. A committed staff of professionals and volunteers provide essential resettlement services to refugee families including basic necessities, education, employment, social services and advocacy.

With an inventory donated by local individuals, student and university groups, schools, churches, and small businesses, the Resettlement Shop at the Baltimore Resettlement Center provides gently used clothing, home goods, and toiletries to refugee and asylee clients free of charge. The Resettlement Shop is committed to providing quality items to clients in an organized, attractive setting. The Resettlement Shop is volunteer-run and open to refugee shoppers from 10am to 2pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. The Resettlement Shop typically receives over 250 refugee client visits per month.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Assist refugee clients during shop hours to locate needed items.Ensure proper record keeping for all items distributed to clients. This includes filling out shop forms, calculating values, and entering information into Excel spreadsheets.Receive, sort, organize, and perform quality control on donations (requires ability to navigate stairs and some lifting).Maintain and orderly and organized donation storage area.Help identify items that are low in stock and communicate this need to the Senior Manager for Strategic Programs and Initiatives.Work cooperatively with IRC staff and other shop volunteers.Perform additional shop-related tasks as necessary to maintain and improve shop programming in Baltimore.

REQUIREMENTS:

Experience or demonstrated interest in working with foreign born individuals.Ability to communicate and work effectively as a team member in a multicultural and multilingual environment.Excellent organizing skills with great attention to detailCreativity and initiative to follow through on projects and ability to work independently.Demonstrated computer skills: ExcelAbility to lift bags and boxes over 20 lbs.Retail experience desirablePositive, patient, and professional demeanor

Reports To: Senior Manager for Strategic Programs and Initiatives

Time commitment: There are three shifts available per week from 9:30-2:30, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Volunteers are encouraged to serve for more than one shift per week.

Volunteer & External Relations Internship

BACKGROUND:

Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a leading non-sectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection, and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict.  The Suburban Washington Refugee Center, where the IRC’s Silver Spring resettlement office is located, annually resettles over 1,000 newly arrived refugees and asylees, providing them a fresh start and opportunities to use their greatest resources—their motivation, their skills and their experiences—to become independent and self-sufficient new Americans.  

SCOPE OF WORK:

The Volunteer & External Relations (VER) Intern will assist the Volunteer & External Relations Coordinator (VC) in planning and implementing IRC’s work with volunteers, interns, supporters and the general public. The VER Intern will help build a diverse base of volunteers and supporters and assist the VC in maintaining and updating database records. The work performed will require at least 20-30 hours per week (Monday – Friday), including on-site and planning time, and may also involve assisting with coordinating off-site volunteers, if needed. The internship is unpaid, but college credit can be arranged through your academic adviser.

The Volunteer & External Relations Intern assist the Volunteer & External Relations Coordinator with the following tasks:

Identify professional development opportunities for internsMaintain individual files and an office-wide database on all volunteers and interns, ensuring all required documentation is complete, accurate and on file.Record and report all volunteer time and keep accurate, appropriately documented electronic records of service time.Host volunteer and intern appreciation events.Hold regular check-in meetings with volunteers and interns.Respond to volunteer inquiries swiftly and keep volunteers informed about news and events using the Volunteer Facebook page and email.Work collaboratively with Suburban Washington Resettlement (SWRC) partners to maximize efforts of IRC interns and volunteers.Develop content for monthly IRC newsletter in accordance with HQ guidelines and deadlines.Maintain IRC Silver Spring Facebook pages through regular posting of new content and daily monitoring and responding. Develops campaigns for social media with fundraising goals and educational components.Raise awareness about refugee resettlement and recruit volunteers and interns through participation in outreach events at colleges and universities. Coordinate events (i.e., Open House, Thanksgiving, World Refugee Day).Solicit and manage donations.

Learning Objectives:

Intern will learn to plan and coordinate event detailsIntern will learn to use social media to promote a charitable cause. Intern will learn to write compelling stories to highlight a charitable cause and its beneficiariesIntern will learn to cultivate, manage and maintain strategic partnerships with community organizations, businesses, and government. Intern will learn to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse cultures.Intern will learn to conduct presentations for targeted audiences.

Qualifications:

All applicants must be current students or recent graduates (within 6 months of school)* Enthusiasm and patience in working with (and often teaching) volunteers Competent computer skills and proficiency in Excel.Outstanding writing, communication, editing and proofreading skillsAbility to be flexible based on needsKnowledge and experience managing social media accounts (i.e., Facebook fanpage)Ability to collaborate effectivelyAbility to solve problems independently and creativelyComfortable working in a multi-cultural environment; international experience and knowledge of refugee issues a plus.Preferred candidates will be currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an accredited curriculum of study in Public Policy, Public Relations, Communications, or related field.
