Interpreter
Scope:
Under the supervision of the Finance and Operations Coordinator, the Interpreter will provide interpretation to IRC San Diego clients who possess limited proficiency in English.
Responsibilities:
Provide interpretation in Amharic, Arabic, Karen, Nepalese, Swahili, Farsi, French, Spanish, or other refugee languages during regularly scheduled trainings and in the classroom, Provide one-on-one technical assistance sessions to eligible participants with limited English proficiencyProvide clerical support and assist participants to complete basic formsSupport training staff with outreach efforts Assist training staff with other tasks as assignedRequirements:
Skills and Abilities: Fluency in English and at least one of the following languages required: Amharic, Arabic, Karen, Nepalese, Swahili, Farsi, French, Spanish or other refugee languages
Education: Education in linguistics or related field and/or evidence of training in interpretation techniques strongly desired
Experience: Prior experience providing interpretive services strongly desired
Other: Must be a team player. Some local travel required (must have valid CA Driver License and automobile insurance).

Health Interpreter (Somali)
Scope:
The Health Interpreter will provide up to 17 hours/week of interpreting services for refugees attending medical, employment, and other appointments. In addition, in-house interpreting services will include activities such as assessments, R&P, cultural orientations, job development, financial literacy, school enrollments, and other activities in which clients are involved. Some written translation may also be required. This position reports officially to the Health Program Manager, while oversight of day-to-day activities may be provided by the Interpreter Coordinator.
Responsibilities:
Participate in all orientation and training activities for the medical interpreters and staff; successfully complete Bridging the Gap Medical Training (if haven’t already) Assist in facilitating communication between medical staff and refugee clients by providing literal interpretation on-site. Provide spoken language interpretation to patients, medical providers and staff in person or over the telephone. Assist health professionals with non-English/limited English speaking patients in filling out a variety of forms for program eligibility, registration and medical history, as instructed by the Interpreter Coordinator. Assist in creating and/or coordinating written translation services and access to other multilingual resources as requested/necessary. Translate written materials and prepare written reports as needed or instructed by the Interpreter Coordinator.Communicate regularly with the Health Program Manager and/or IRC staff about outcomes of appointments/services provided. Prepare written reports/case notes of outcomes of medical appointmentsWhen requested, remind clients of appointments and explain or arrange for transportation. May require transportation of clients to appointments.Comply with all policies and protocols of the agency. Participate in all program meetings and staff development activities. Fluency in written and spoken English and client languages needed: SomaliMinimum of 1 year of professional interpreting and previous experience working with refugees preferred Ability to effectively communicate and work independently as well as a team member in a cross-cultural environment.Ability to prioritize and manage time effectivelyAbility to work well with people, such as refugee clients, local service providers, field professionals, etc. Valid driver’s license; current and legally sufficient insurance and reliable transportationIRC leading the way from harm to home.
