Communication Support Internship

The intern will assist the UN Volunteers in the Lao PDR Field Unit Office in their day-to-day activities under the 2014 work plan. The main area of work will be within information and communication, and particularly, researching, collecting, editing and distributing English-based materials, articles and publications for the office as part of the advocacy strategy. The intern will be based at the UN Volunteers Lao PDR Field Unit Office in Vientiane together with the Programme Assistant and Programme Officer, and will report to the Programme Officer. In addition, the intern will work closely with different stakeholders including other UN agencies and volunteer organisations on all the initiatives and activities relevant to information and communication in Lao and English. The intern will be immersed in a dynamic cross-cultural learning environment and have the opportunity to gain significant skills for his/her own professional and personal growth.

Objectives of the internship

The main objectives of this internship are:

* To enhance the intern’s understanding of the UN system, development work and the UN Volunteers programme;
* To enhance the intern’s professional knowledge and skills through supervised and guided practical hands-on experience and involvement in the advocacy strategy of the UN Volunteer Field Unit in Lao PDR;
* To expose the intern to the international working environment of a multilateral organization.

Duties and Responsibilities

UN Volunteers Field Unit in Laos is providing internship opportunities to support mainly communication tasks and research as part of the advocacy strategy in Lao PDR. The specific duties and responsibilities of the intern will include, but may not be limited to:

* Liaise with the Department of Social Work and Social Development at the Lao National University to agree on an MOU for collaboration and take responsibility for implementing and coordinating all activities agreed upon; previously discussed activities include: providing support for their alcohol and substance abuse campaign, arranging for guest speakers to support classes on volunteerism, implementing an internship scheme for students at the university to undertake at the UNV Field Unit, creating voluntary opportunities for students to participate in, sharing information with students about the role of UNV within the UN and the development process, building partnerships with other universities in developing countries to facilitate South-South cooperation;
* Discuss further with the Lao National University the possibility of collaborating together to execute a photo exhibition showcasing the work of UN Volunteers and volunteers from partner agencies in Lao PDR;
* Collaborate with UNVs partner volunteer agencies to help develop a documentary video about the impact of volunteerism on the development process in Lao PDR;
* Provide support to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in compiling their report “The Status of Volunteerism in Lao PDR”, in the form of research, drafting, editing and critical feedback;
* Help design and develop promotional materials such as brochures for outreach activities;
* Take meeting minutes, draft agendas, prepare presentations;
* Assist in other tasks as required.
Living conditions

The position will be based in the capital, Vientiane. Living conditions in Vientiane are comfortable but residents must make concessions due to the tropical climate and under-developed infrastructure, including health facilities.

Vientiane is a relatively safe place to live in, with violent crime incidents very rare. However, single females should exert vigilance if moving alone during the dark and it is best advised to move in groups.

The biggest hazards relate to traffic accidents, hence utmost care should be exerted when in traffic, especially when riding a motorbike.

The Vientiane entertainment scene is still quiet and in order to avoid feeling lonely the person should be proactive in forming friendships, and hence should be ready to make the best of e. g. the UNV Buddy Programme.

There is a wide range of housing options in Vientiane located within easy reach of the UN Volunteers office. Houses or apartments are usually of good standards. All basic commodities can be bought in Vientiane and its immediate vicinity. The UNV Office in Laos will assist the UNV intern in finding adequate accommodation. House shares with 3-4 people are most common but single apartments are also available.

Vientiane’s city centre is full of restaurants, shops, bars and internet cafes all line up along the Mekong river.

Conditions of the internship

The Intern is not paid by UNV,

All costs such as living expenses, travel, housing, and any other costs related to the internship must be borne by the intern unless provided for by a sponsoring institution.

UN Volunteers Field Unit in Lao PDR will not cover any costs except for activities related to the implementation of projects to which the intern is assigned. UN Volunteers will assist the selected candidate in obtaining a visa, but does not provide financial support of any kind to the intern. The intern is expected to make his/her own arrangements for travel, lodging and living expenses during the internship period in agreement with UNDP internship guidelines.

* Excellent communication skills, especially writing and editing in English (mother tongue or equivalent);

Partnerships Internship - UNDP/SDG-F Secretariat

The purpose of this internship is to support the SDG-F Secretariat in its relationship with global partners (academic institutions, civil society organizations, private sector, think tanks and international organizations) to advance sustainable development and share experiences from the MDG Achievement Fund’s programmes in the context of the debate of a new development agenda post 2015. He/she will contribute to establish and develop strong and collaborative partnerships.
The required tasks to be performed to support the SDG-F Secretariat include:
* Contribute to prepare partnerships supporting documentation, including Memorandums of Understanding, concept notes, correspondence with partners, minutes…;
* Systematize and consolidate partnerships information;
* Prepare and updated database of partners;
* Logistical support to organize meetings and events with potential partners;
* Support the organization and management of the SDG-F’s private sector advisory group;
* Provide research support on post 2015 debate and development agenda, with special attention to find synergies with current and potential partners;
* Prepare documents and research on MDG-F lessons learned and results;

Maternal and Child Health Internship

Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a leading non-sectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection, and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict.  The Suburban Washington Refugee Center, where the IRC’s Silver Spring resettlement office is located, has resettled more than 2,000 new refugee arrivals, providing them a fresh start and opportunities to use their greatest resources—their motivation, their skills and their experiences—to become independent and self-sufficient new Americans.  Currently, the IRC Silver Spring resettles and/or provides assistance to over 700 refugees and asylees each year.

The IRC’s Public Health Program provides medical case management, health education and patient advocacy services for refugees and asylees resettled by the Suburban Washington Resettlement Center (SWRC). Significant portions of newly arrived clients are considered medically vulnerable, whose medical conditions have been compounded by living conditions overseas and are further exacerbated by systemic barriers to accessing healthcare in the U.S. The program focuses on reducing healthcare disparities for clients by facilitating their access to health care, education, resources, and psychosocial support.

Responsibilities

Support members of the health team responsible for providing complex medical case management for pregnant/post-partum clients and their families. Serve as a patient advocate by accompanying pregnant/post-partum clients to medical appointments, aiding in navigating local healthcare services, as well as assisting with reporting and coordinating necessary follow-up care  Provide one-on-one and family-centered health education to reinforce clients’ understandings of prenatal care, healthy behaviors, treatment instructions and follow-up care, as well as preparing for delivery and post-delivery in the U.S.Develop, coordinate and facilitate health promotion workshops focused on prenatal care, family planning, and well-child topicsCreate and/or adapt culturally appropriate health education materials and resource guidesConduct research and support outreach to develop partnerships with community health organizations and providersOther duties, research and special projects as assigned

As an intern in the Bureau of Library and Information Services (IMS), you will gain experience in work related to the design, adaption, establishment, development, operation and management of general and specialized library and information services, systems and networks to support ILO programmes and to raise awareness of ILO research and data.

Internship in Social Protection

The Social Protection Department (SOCPRO) is responsible for promoting enhanced coverage and effectiveness of social protection for all through efficient and sustainable national social protection floors and comprehensive social security systems, in line with provisions of Recommendation No. 202 concerning national floors of social protection and other ILO social security standards. Internships are possible under either or both of the two technical branches of Social Protection Department: The Social Policy, Governance and Standards Branch is responsible for social protection policy development and design, standard setting in the area of social protection, promotion and monitoring of implementation of existing social protection standards, governance of social protection programmes and overall national systems. The Public Finance, Actuarial and Statistics Branch is responsible for applying the principles and values of ILO social security, labour protection and employment standards to public finance, actuarial and statistical conceptual developments in the analysis of public policies relating to social protection. ILO Social Protection Department is responsible to develop capacity building activities in these areas through technical cooperation activities and with the ITC in Turin.

The International Social Security Association is the principal international institution bringing together social security agencies and organizations. The ISSA's aim is to promote dynamic social security as the social dimension in a globalizing world by supporting excellence in social security administration. Founded in 1927, the ISSA has its headquarters at the International Labour Office, in Geneva. Internships are possible under either of two branches of the ISSA: Social Security Promotion (SSPROM - promotion of social security through knowledge transfer, publications, web development, media relations and corporate communications) and the Social Security Observatory (SSO - development of the knowledge base, research and policy analysis, ISSA technical commissions, and the documentation service).

Learning area:

As an intern in the ISSA or ILO Social Protection Department, you will be exposed to a whole range of areas covered by social protection, composed of contributory and non-contributory social security programmes (i. e. social assistance and social insurance schemes). This includes policy design, issues of implementation, delivery and administration, monitoring and evaluation, including through quantitative methods and tools, related to contributory and non-contributory social security programmes providing income security and access to health care in case of unemployment, old-age, sickness, disability, work injury, maternity or poverty and vulnerability in general as well as to overall social protection systems. Both the ILO Social Protection Department and the ISSA aim to promote the extension and improvement of social security protection globally and to develop practical analytical methodologies and tools reflecting the latest developments.

You would be gaining experience working with specialists who are involved in the following tasks: researching and analysing recent trends and developments in social security; collecting social security-related statistical data and other information; promoting social security worldwide through application of international labour standards (like ILO Convention 102 and Recommendation 202); analysing the financial and actuarial situation of social protection systems; providing technical assistance to countries on the implementation/management of social security schemes; and preparing ISSA/ILO Social Protection Department publications and organizing technical meetings and analogous activities.

Interns should expect to devote between 20% to 30% of their time to support the administration of technical activities.

Interns should expect to devote 10% to 20% of their time to administrative tasks.

Required Qualifications

Education
Area of studies:

Applicant should currently follow a course of study in economics, econometrics, law, actuarial sciences, statistics or social sciences and related disciplines (last year of Master degree or above); or have completed such studies within 12 months prior to this application.

Experience

Relevant work experience in social security/protection or international development, knowledge of IT and quantitative modelling would be an advantage.

Programming experience and relevant studies in econometric modelling, or actuarial sciences or applied statistics are required for an internship in the Public Finance, Actuarial and Statistics Branch of SOCPRO.

Languages

You should have working knowledge (both oral and written) of at least one of the ILO's official languages (English, French or Spanish).

Education
Area of studies: The disciplinary background can be in labour law, labour economics, statistics, gender studies, occupational safety and health, engineering, medicine, migration policy, public health policies (with a focus on HIV/AIDS) or another relevant field of study.

Applicant should currently follow a course of study (last year of Master degree or above), or have completed studies within 12 months prior to this application.

Experience

Any previous work experience in a relevant field is an advantage, for example as a research assistant or with an NGO dealing with a topic relevant to labour protection.

Languages

Internship in Communication and Public Information

As an intern in the field of communication and public information, you will gain experience in the planning and implementation of activities designed to raise awareness of the work of the ILO, and to promote support for, and better understanding of, its aims and programmes through various media (such as printed information including publications; the Web; press conferences; news releases; press reports; radio broadcasts; photographs; television programmes; films and social media) and targeting various audiences, including the ILO constituents (governments and employers' and workers' organizations) policy makers, donors, academia, the UN system and civil society.

You will work alongside specialists who produce written and audio-visual information and media materials based on ILO research and data; engage target audiences via ILO and international events and meetings; organize exhibitions and displays and edit and market ILO publications.

Interns should expect to devote 10% to 20% of their time to administrative tasks.

There are four areas to work in:

1. Web development:
- Field of Education: Computer science, Information Architecture, Web and interface design.
- Experience: Any relevant experience with Content Management Systems, Information Architecture, Usability, LINUX (SUSE), Oracle AS and Oracle UCM, Java and XML.

2. Print and broadcast media:
- Field of Education: Communication, journalism or media studies.
- Experience: Any relevant experience in the fields of print and broadcast media, including writing summaries of complex reports and data, writing press releases and articles, video production, using video editing systems and related graphics software and using social media techniques and software.

3. Publications:
- Field of Education: Studies in publishing, economics, social sciences or law would be an advantage.
- Experience: Work experience in any area of publishing.

4. Photo / Data base:
- Field of Education: library and information or information management studies would be an advantage.

Internship in Monitoring and Evaluation

The Evaluation Unit (EVAL) is responsible for the implementation and coordination of evaluation policy, practices and oversight of selected evaluation activities funded by regular budget and donor agencies of the ILO. The unit reports directly to the Director General.

Internships with EVAL provide an opportunity for selected graduate students who are pursuing a course of study or work in one of the social sciences, economics, or public administration to increase their understanding of the work of the Office and the application of ILO principles, programmes and strategies. More specifically it will be an opportunity for interns to enhance their writing, research, analytical and data processing skills by gaining practical work experience though direct involvement in one of the following activities:

Monitoring and reporting of evaluation activities and outcomes in the ILO
Desk review for strategy and thematic evaluations (national employment policy; implementing international labour standards through sectoral approaches/ Better Work; Decent Work Country Programme of support to India);
Review of approaches to improve constituent institutional capacities, and development of capacity building in evaluation;
Evaluation knowledge management products and services (database, newsletter, web-enabled knowledge platforms, etc. );
Improving ILO capacities and quality control for impact evaluation, through the development of tools and guidelines, training, and the development and maintenance of process for tracking elements and progress.

Required Qualifications

Education
Area of studies: Social sciences, economics, or public administration

Experience

Experience in conducting research and academic course work in research methods; Documentable experience in analysing socio-economic data; Experience in the developing and management of databases; Specific knowledge of evaluation and evaluation methods.

Command of Microsoft Excel; familiarity with SPSS and data analysis desired; Work experience in international development, preferably at country level, would be an asset

Languages

You should have working knowledge (both oral and written) of at least one of the ILO's official languages (English, French or Spanish).

INTERNSHIPS

IFAD’s North American Liaison Office (NALO) offers internships in Washington, DC to individuals pursuing a course of studies or practical experience in international development, international relations and policy advocacy. Our internships expose students to a wide range of development issues, such as smallholder agriculture and rural development, sustainability, climate change, gender issues, and development finance, among many others.

Qualifications

Applicants should be able to work full-time (40 hours per week) during the summer semester. Interns must have excellent analytical and writing abilities, good interpersonal and communications skills, and a strong interest in international development, particularly agricultural and rural development. We accept applications from both graduate and undergraduate students. This is an unpaid internship. Letters of reference are provided for those who successfully complete the internship.

Outcomes for the Intern

The IFAD/NALO internship will afford students and young professionals the opportunity to gain knowledge of policymaking processes and deepen their understanding of policy issues related to rural development and international development finance. Interns will gain familiarity with the workings of a United Nations organization and international financial institution and acquire an understanding of the purpose and functioning of a liaison office. In addition, interns will learn about career possibilities in the field of international development policy and develop their skills and abilities in a highly specialized policy environment.

Economic Empowerment Internship: Marketing & External Relations

BACKGROUND: Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a leading nonsectarian, non-governmental organization providing relief, protection and resettlement services for refugees and other persons fleeing war, persecution and violent conflict.  In the United States, IRC provides assistance to refugees from around the world who have been approved by the U.S. federal government for resettlement. At the Suburban Washington Resettlement Center in Silver Spring, Maryland, our IRC Washington, DC Regional Office (IRC/DC) serves refugees, asylees and victims of human trafficking who live in southern Maryland, DC and northern Virginia.

SCOPE OF INTERN WORK:

The first job is an essential element in helping refugees become economically self-sufficient. The Refugee Employment Interns work closely with Employment Specialists to support all aspects of clients' journey to self-sufficiency. This position will support the External Relations and Marketing division of the Employment Team.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Refugee Employment Interns will assist the Employment Specialists with the following tasks:

Assist in preparing marketing materials for employment-focused events including the Spring Job FairManage the Job Board Facebook page Assist in acquiring employment success stories for IRC NewsletterWork one-on-one with refugees and asylees to identify and meet employment needs, including creating resumes, completing applications, and editing cover lettersPrepare clients for interviews through one-on-one coaching and Job Readiness TrainingResearch programs beneficial to clients including apprenticeship and education programsIdentify potential employers and initiate contact by searching online and cold-calling Accompany clients to job interviews and assist with the completion of new hire paperworkDevelopment and coordinate career advancement workshops and in-house job fairsProvide assistance with data entry projects and organization of client filesOther duties as identified by the Employment Specialist

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Internship with The Biodiversity Finance Initiative - BIOFIN

The main responsibility of the Intern will be to develop a resource database on biodiversity finance, through the following tasks:

* Review and map existing resources from the BIOFIN team, UNDP experts, relevant websites and publications of related initiatives and define key resources for inclusion in the database in consultation with the BIOFIN team;
* Develop the resource database and integrate key resources into the BIOFIN and NBSAP Forum web platforms;
* Review international best practises to identify case studies that can serve as examples for BIOFIN work;
* Write stories and news articles on BIOFIN activities;
* Liaise with national BIOFIN teams to identify national level resources and obtain inputs for news stories and case studies;
* Other tasks as required to support the work of BIOFIN.
Learning:

* The intern will develop a good overview of global biodiversity financing practises and a basic understanding of UNDP project management concepts.
