Appointment against this post is on a local basis. External candidates will be considered only when no suitable internal candidate from the duty station is identified. The candidate is responsible for any travel expenses incurred and visa or work permit issues in order to take-up the appointment. All staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers in accordance with established rules and procedures.

Responsibilities:
The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the representative office of the Secretary-General. UNON supports programme implementation of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the UN Human Settlements Programme (UNHABITAT) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, conference and information services (www.unon.org). The post is located in the Office of Director-General, United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), Security and Safety Service.

Responsibilities

Under the overall command of the Chief of Security, the security officer is required to perform armed security functions and reports directly to the Security Sergeant or Supervising Officer. Within delegated authority, the Security Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

1. Provides security coverage of entry points throughout the United Nations compound to prevent entry to unauthorized person and the unauthorized removal of UN property.
2. Screens all personnel, packages and vehicles entering the premises including clearance through metal detectors; checks packages both visually and by use of x-ray equipment; identifies and retains custody of weapons entering the premises with the authority to either confiscate or return said weapons upon owners' exit from the premises.
3. Conducts exterior and watch-tour patrols throughout the compound and for the purpose of intercepting unauthorized persons attempting to have gained entry to the premises, reporting all security, fire and safety violations to the Security Control Centre.
4. Provides information and directions to all persons associated with the organization.
5. Controls, identifies and clears pedestrian and vehicular traffic entering and exiting the premises; maintains log books and records as required.
6. Maintains alertness for any potential or actual breaches of security and any disturbances or unusual activity; and reports these immediately.
7. Ensures that all UN property being carried from the complex is checked for appropriate documentation.
8. Perform other related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Completion of secondary education or equivalent with supplemental training in Security or Military is required. Sound and thorough knowledge of security related matters.
Work Experience:
A minimum of 3 years’ experience in security operations, including in civilian Police Force, Military Police or other relevant military operation is required. An age limit of 35 years or below is applicable for this post.
Languages:
English and French are the two working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of a second Official UN language is an advantage.
Other Desirable Skills:
Must be mentally and physically fit and must have a valid Driving license. All duties are performed in uniform. At times, however, the Officer may be required to perform duties in civilian clothes. Duties may require long periods of standing, working evenings, overnights and on weekends. The officer is required to obtain and maintain appropriate host country licenses, including, but not limited to, pistol and vehicle operator licenses. Computer and investigative skill is an asset.
