Volunteer Program Intern

SCOPE OF WORK:

This is an unpaid internship.


The International Rescue Committee (IRC) in Baltimore is a non-profit, non-sectarian refugee resettlement agency dedicated to working together with legally admitted refugees to assist them in rebuilding lives and reuniting families in the greater Baltimore area. A committed staff of professionals and volunteers provide essential resettlement services to refugee families including basic necessities, education, employment, social services and advocacy.

PURPOSE: The Volunteer Program Intern will help the Volunteer Coordinator organize, expand, and promote volunteer and internship opportunities with the IRC in Baltimore.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Recruit, screen, orient and match interns and volunteers with appropriate service opportunities.Maintain individual files on all volunteer and interns staff, ensuring all required documentation is complete, accurate and on file.Record and report all volunteer time and keep accurate, appropriately documented electronic and paper records of service time.Maintain and distribute accurate and up-to-date job descriptions for all volunteer and internship opportunities. Strengthen and grow existing intern and volunteer program by ensuring job descriptions align with staff and client needsRecognize volunteers and their service through events and communications.Respond to volunteer inquiries swiftly and keep volunteers informed about news and events

REQUIREMENTS:

Reliable, flexible, and able to work independently and under pressure in a fast-paced environment.An interest in international and refugee issues.Creativity and initiative to follow through on projects.Strong desire to help people and enthusiasm for working in a multi-cultural setting.Computer literacy – preferably with PC systems.A car/driver’s license is beneficial.Energetic, empathetic, and ready to do a variety of jobs.Willing to adhere to IRC volunteer and workplace policies.Excellent strategic thinking, planning, and organizational skills.Superior writing and editing skills, with strong attention to detail.Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.Knowledge of program design and/or experience in social services delivery.

 TIME COMMITMENT:

Fall and Spring interns are required to work at least 15 hours per week, Monday through Friday, for a minimum of 12 weeks in the Fall and Spring.Summer interns are required to work at least 25 hours per week, Monday through Friday, for the entire summer.
