Volunteer & External Relations Internship

BACKGROUND:

Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) is a leading non-sectarian, voluntary organization providing relief, protection, and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict.  The Suburban Washington Refugee Center, where the IRC’s Silver Spring resettlement office is located, annually resettles over 1,000 newly arrived refugees and asylees, providing them a fresh start and opportunities to use their greatest resources—their motivation, their skills and their experiences—to become independent and self-sufficient new Americans.  

SCOPE OF WORK:

The Volunteer & External Relations (VER) Intern will assist the Volunteer & External Relations Coordinator (VC) in planning and implementing IRC’s work with volunteers, interns, supporters and the general public. The VER Intern will help build a diverse base of volunteers and supporters and assist the VC in maintaining and updating database records. The work performed will require at least 20-30 hours per week (Monday – Friday), including on-site and planning time, and may also involve assisting with coordinating off-site volunteers, if needed. The internship is unpaid, but college credit can be arranged through your academic adviser.

The Volunteer & External Relations Intern assist the Volunteer & External Relations Coordinator with the following tasks:

Identify professional development opportunities for internsMaintain individual files and an office-wide database on all volunteers and interns, ensuring all required documentation is complete, accurate and on file.Record and report all volunteer time and keep accurate, appropriately documented electronic records of service time.Host volunteer and intern appreciation events.Hold regular check-in meetings with volunteers and interns.Respond to volunteer inquiries swiftly and keep volunteers informed about news and events using the Volunteer Facebook page and email.Work collaboratively with Suburban Washington Resettlement (SWRC) partners to maximize efforts of IRC interns and volunteers.Develop content for monthly IRC newsletter in accordance with HQ guidelines and deadlines.Maintain IRC Silver Spring Facebook pages through regular posting of new content and daily monitoring and responding. Develops campaigns for social media with fundraising goals and educational components.Raise awareness about refugee resettlement and recruit volunteers and interns through participation in outreach events at colleges and universities. Coordinate events (i.e., Open House, Thanksgiving, World Refugee Day).Solicit and manage donations.

Learning Objectives:

Intern will learn to write compelling stories to highlight a charitable cause and its beneficiariesIntern will learn to cultivate, manage and maintain strategic partnerships with community organizations, businesses, and government. Intern will learn to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse cultures.Intern will learn to conduct presentations for targeted audiences.

Qualifications:

All applicants must be current students or recent graduates (within 6 months of school)* Enthusiasm and patience in working with (and often teaching) volunteers Competent computer skills and proficiency in Excel.Outstanding writing, communication, editing and proofreading skillsAbility to be flexible based on needsKnowledge and experience managing social media accounts (i.e., Facebook fanpage)Ability to collaborate effectivelyAbility to solve problems independently and creativelyComfortable working in a multi-cultural environment; international experience and knowledge of refugee issues a plus.Preferred candidates will be currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an accredited curriculum of study in Public Policy, Public Relations, Communications, or related field.
