Position: Nutrition Volunteer

Location: New York

Reports To: New Roots Program Manager

Hours: Flexible schedule

The IRC’s New Roots program in New York was established in 2011 to help newly-arrived refugees, asylees and other immigrant populations in the south Bronx access fresh, affordable and healthy produce, better integrate into their communities, and become more financially self-sufficient.  The New Roots Program provides training and support to newly arrived families on improving and continuing good health.

Scope of Work:

Under the direct supervision of the New Roots Program Manager, and in collaboration with the Education staff, the Nutrition Volunteer will develop lesson plans and conduct trainings about healthy food access, choices and preparation. This volunteer position offers a flexible schedule.

Responsibilities:

Develop and compile nutrition and food access educational materials, Create interactive activities for pre-literate, ESL populations to explore food, markets, healthy choices and preparation techniques,Conduct cooking demonstrations and food and nutrition trainings as needed,Create surveys or questionnaire to determine effectiveness of trainings,Work closely with Food Secure Resettlement Intern and assist with activities as needed, Assist clients as needed with food access and preparation activities,Create a data collection tool to track clients who have received nutrition education.

Requirements:

A strong passion for and knowledge of food and nutrition issues,Bachelor’s degree or course work in related field preferred,Experience developing lesson plans and teaching classes highly preferred,Background in nutrition education or cooking preferred,Demonstrated experience with community organizing and engagement, particularly with disadvantaged communities and related to food justice or health, preferred,Prior experience working with refugees and/or immigrant communities Strong communication, writing, presentation, facilitation and organizational skills required,A flexible schedule,Second language (Spanish, French, Arabic or Karen) and interpretation skills a plus.IRC leading the way from harm to home.
