Resettlement Shop Volunteer

SCOPE OF WORK:

This is an unpaid volunteer position.

The International Rescue Committee of Baltimore is a non-profit, non-sectarian refugee resettlement agency dedicated to working together with legally admitted refugees to assist them in rebuilding lives and reuniting families in the greater Baltimore area. A committed staff of professionals and volunteers provide essential resettlement services to refugee families including basic necessities, education, employment, social services and advocacy.

With an inventory donated by local individuals, student and university groups, schools, churches, and small businesses, the Resettlement Shop at the Baltimore Resettlement Center provides gently used clothing, home goods, and toiletries to refugee and asylee clients free of charge. The Resettlement Shop is committed to providing quality items to clients in an organized, attractive setting. The Resettlement Shop is volunteer-run and open to refugee shoppers from 10am to 2pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays. The Resettlement Shop typically receives over 250 refugee client visits per month.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Assist refugee clients during shop hours to locate needed items.Ensure proper record keeping for all items distributed to clients. This includes filling out shop forms, calculating values, and entering information into Excel spreadsheets.Receive, sort, organize, and perform quality control on donations (requires ability to navigate stairs and some lifting).Maintain and orderly and organized donation storage area.Help identify items that are low in stock and communicate this need to the Senior Manager for Strategic Programs and Initiatives.Work cooperatively with IRC staff and other shop volunteers.Perform additional shop-related tasks as necessary to maintain and improve shop programming in Baltimore.

REQUIREMENTS:

Experience or demonstrated interest in working with foreign born individuals.Ability to communicate and work effectively as a team member in a multicultural and multilingual environment.Excellent organizing skills with great attention to detailCreativity and initiative to follow through on projects and ability to work independently.Demonstrated computer skills: ExcelAbility to lift bags and boxes over 20 lbs.Retail experience desirablePositive, patient, and professional demeanor

Reports To: Senior Manager for Strategic Programs and Initiatives

Time commitment: There are three shifts available per week from 9:30-2:30, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Volunteers are encouraged to serve for more than one shift per week.
