How to get your foot in the door of any companyVeronica C. | November 12, 2014 How to get your foot in the door of any company

You’ve gone through extensive proofreading of your resume, rehashed your cover letters multiple times and added polish your LinkedIn profile. But you’re still frustrated by the lack of callbacks and interview opportunities from the prospective employers you’ve applied to. Sometimes it takes more than a clean presentation to be appealing to a recruiter. If you find yourself struggling to land interviews, try out some of these methods to get your foot in the door.

Get involved

Companies want to hire graduates that have not just professional experience, but social experience as well. There are an abundance of on-campus and off-campus organizations that can match your career track or area of interest. Volunteering your time to work with them adds great padding to your resume and gives you valuable experience and knowledge about the working world. Additionally, some of the people in the organization may be employed at a company you’re looking to work for and could help get your resume on the right desk.

Connect with alumni and former colleagues

Don’t underestimate the power of your soon-to-be alma mater. Your alumni office provides adequate resources to network with alumni from your university. Often, they are working full-time or have connections to recruiters which can be used to your advantage. Offer to meet them for lunch or drinks to discuss lift after college and what goals you have in mind for yourself. You’d be surprised how willing they are to lend you a hand. Additionally, get in touch with past coworkers. While alumni can put in a good word, previous colleagues have seen you in action before and know the value you can bring to a business. They can be your best help option when searching for a full-time job.

Commit to follow-ups

It’s hard to conduct follow up phone calls and emails because it can make you feel like a pest. But while recruiters and hiring managers may have busy schedules, they take note of the individuals that are vigilant in pursuing employment at their company. You don’t need to call every day to check on your candidacy – that’s how you become a burden. Instead, wait two or three days after contact to get in touch with them. A brief, friendly email or voicemail is all you’ll need to keep your name in their minds when they’re considering who to hire.

Work a part-time job

It’s a means to an end. Take a part time job doing almost anything and you can increase your chances of landing a full-time position upon graduation. It may not seem like working 25 hours a week for minimum wage is ideal, but prospective employers will admire the fact that you put in the effort to remain employed while still going to school. Long gaps in jobs are red flags to recruiters, as it makes it look like you weren’t putting in the effort to stay employed. Since you’re trying to sell your ability to positively contribute to the company’s success, not working for six to eight months is detrimental to your cause.

Landing internships or full-time jobs can be a frustrating process, but you shouldn’t let it get to you. You know your strengths and weaknesses and how to appropriately market yourself to a manager. Put your knowledge to the test and keep these tips in mind – neither of them will steer you wrong.

At Experience.com, our mission is to provide the latest marketplace insights for students, recent college graduates and industry veterans. With expert guidance and breaking news about available premium entry level jobs and paid internships, your career starts here.

Whose Human Rights Day is it?

by Valérie Bah

During these 16 days of activism, we also celebrate Human Rights Day, a day for which the United Nations has proposed the slogan, “365,” suggesting that the world should embrace the idea that every day of the year should be Human Rights Day.

It’s an apt theme, given the fact that earmarked days can send the message that the public should accept atrocious norms most of the time as long as it occasionally organizes high level ceremonies or sets aside five minutes of silence. Similar criticism has been levied on the celebration of International Women’s day and Black History Month in the US. Commemorative days imply that the majority of the time belongs to a wretched status quo.

The same could be said of the geographical provenance of human rights, sometimes dismissed as a “western” construct. I will illustrate with examples from two countries in Africa.

Recently in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), more than 200 Congolese human rights defenders signed off on a press release denouncing politicians for framing them as enemies of the state. The press release complained about a campaign led by DRC politicians to paint them as traitors and destroy their public image in light of an unfavorable human rights report.

In the context of “Opération Likofi (‘punch’ in Lingala)” a DRC government campaign to reduce the incidence of violent crime in Kinshasa, these Congolese human rights observers have drawn attention to extrajudicial killings and summary executions which took place throughout the campaign by publishing their findings.

The report of these Congolese human rights defenders came on the heels of other damning reports on Operation Likofi filed by Human Rights Watch and the United Nations Joint Human Rights Office (UNJHRO) which resulted in denials from the Minister of the interior and the expulsion of Scott Campbell, the UN envoy for human rights from the DRC. These reports were mostly dismissed by politicians as foreign interlopers. Even the local media has taken this stance. Several newspapers have published cartoons depicting foreign and local human rights defenders as absurd defenders of criminals.

(Translation: “Go away, Campbell!!! You’re creating more problems than solutions…”)

In Togo, widows face abusive rites, including seclusion, and sometimes forced sex, although the nation is a signatory to the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and its constitution and family code make provisions for the protection of women’s rights, indicating a schism between traditional and adopted laws.

In light of this, a civil society organization, Association de femmes pour la santé et le dévelopement (ALAFIA), which strives to promote girls’ education, livelihoods for women, and access to reproductive health, has lobbied community leaders, including queen mothers, to curb practices and traditions that harm widows.

Through two years of advocacy, ALAFIA was able to change laws in several cantons to abolish these rites. In one of the locations where they operate, a head of canton abolished long widowhood rites.

An interesting aspect of ALAFIA’s advocacy is that, though they rely on donors outside of Togo, they refuse to see it as an externally-imposed initiative, but rather as a movement driven from the inside.

“We have found strategies to promote the perception that this is an external initiative,” said Berthe Adzoavi Tattey from ALAFIA, dismissing the suggestion that the fight for human rights is associated to any particular identity. “For example, even Christian religions have come in from outside (of Togo) and denounced certain practices.”

Today is Human Rights Day. Even so, it is Togo’s Human Rights Day; it’s the DRC’s Human Rights Day; it’s our Human Rights Day.

Senior Program Officer – Collaborations Open Society Foundations – Africa Regional Office

The Open Society Foundations work to build vibrant and tolerant societies whose governments are accountable and open to criticism, whose laws and policies are open to debate and correction, and whose political institutions are open to the participation of all people. We seek to strengthen justice and the rule of law; broaden respect for human rights, including the rights of minorities; encourage pluralism and a robust diversity of opinion; deepen democratic practice and participation; expand economic equity; support effective governance; and invest in individuals, public and private organizations, and social movements that advance these goals.

We are a global network of foundations committed to local knowledge and national expertise. Our network includes national foundations, regional foundations, and other geographic programs operating in more than one hundred countries. At the same time, many programs with global reach operate from our four headquarters in Europe and the United States, including programs on digital information, documentary photography, drug policy, early childhood, education, fellowships, fiscal governance, higher education, human rights, international migration, justice, public health, scholarships, think tanks, and women’s rights. In addition to making grants to organizations and individuals, the Open Society Foundations engage in policy advocacy, legal advocacy and litigation, program-related investing, and public communications, as well as providing direct assistance to governments. Most programs and foundations in the network are governed or advised by their own boards.

The Open Society Foundations are the global philanthropies of George Soros, who, as chairman, plays an active role in the work of the foundations.

Purpose of Position:  The purpose of the Senior Program Officer (Collaborations) role is to enable the Africa Regional Office to fulfil its commitment to promote and support collaboration among the many Open Society Foundations programs that work in Africa. Open Society Foundations teams have a range of tools to deploy and bringing them into collaborative projects allows simultaneous use of multiple tools to advance our work. Many of the projects we undertake are complex and exhibit multiple dimensions making it desirable to bring programs with different thematic capacities together. In practice, this may sometimes require the post holder to take on significant substantive work themselves on a program issue, to convene cross-program groups of staff, to diagnose and help resolve practical challenges, or to promote or support ideas for new collaborations. In the current strategy cycle, the biggest element of the role is to help coordinate Open Society Foundations’ work on African Food Security in the context of Climate Change.

In 2014, a new cross-program tool – the shared framework – was launched in Open Society Foundations to promote collaborative work among programs on themes of broad interest to the foundations. The goal is to increase effectiveness by mobilizing and aligning a variety of tools and knowledge from regional foundations, thematic programs, and their partners to work toward a single set of objectives. The shared framework to address food security in Africa in the context of climate change is Open Society Foundations’ first shared framework, and it brings together Open Society Foundations’ four Africa-based foundations and several thematic programs.   A series of objectives have been agreed that advance the participation, influence, and interests of farmers and marginalized constituencies, particularly smallholders, women, pastoralists, the urban poor, youth, and the elderly’ in production and markets.

Open Society Foundations’ Africa Regional Office coordinates the food security shared framework and the holder of this senior program officer position will lead that work during the current four year strategy cycle. They will report to the Africa Regional Director. They will be responsible for convening and encouraging participation in food security collaborations, for helping participating programs to design, develop and implement projects and for trouble-shooting and helping to address challenges as they arise. They will be responsible for the strategic oversight and direction of the overall framework and for supporting programs to participate. They will coordinate use of the Reserve Fund allocated to support food security work.
