The North Atlantic Treaty Organization, commonly called NATO, is the political Headquarters of the Alliance and the permanent home of the North Atlantic Council.  It houses Permanent Representatives and National delegations, the Secretary General and the International Staff, National Military Representatives, the Chairman of the Military Committee and the International Military Staff.  NATO also accommodates the diplomatic mission of Partner countries, the NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCIA) staff, and a number of other NATO agencies, such as NATO Air Command and Control System Management Agency (NACMA), the NATO and NATO Support Agency (NSPA).

The NATO International Staff as well as its subordinate agencies consist of personnel either hired directly by NATO or seconded by their governments.  The U.S. Government announces some NATO positions to allow candidates to begin or retain a U.S. federal career and gain experience in an international environment.  Successful candidates are placed in NATO positions either as a NATO direct-hire or as a U.S. federal employee, subject to the availability of funds.  The method of appointment is determined by the U.S. Mission to NATO at the time of selection.

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM

This position is located in Brussels, Belgium, in the heart of Europe. The surrounding area is a large city within 30 minutes drive from other cities. The base is in central Belgium with the Netherlands, Luxemburg, France, and Germany within a day's drive; the United Kingdom is also easily accessible via ferry or chunnel. It is small but offers most amenities provided by larger installations. The average weather is mild with little extremes of hot or cold seasonal conditions.

General Schedule

• Specialized experience: To Qualify at the GS-15 level,  applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade/level (GS-14).  
• Time in Grade Restriction: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must meet the Time in Grade Restriction.

• Time in Grade Restriction: Must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade (or equivalent).

REMARK:

In addition to the application form, candidates are expected to submit a Word or pdf document, maximum of two A4 pages, summarising their views on the key (and possible other) challenges, and how they would address them if selected for the position.

On this overseas accompanied tour, medical and DoDDS special education services may not be available in the immediate location of this position.
In the overseas areas, access for civilian employees and their families to military medical and dental treatment facilities is on a space-available and reimbursable basis only. Medical care may be provided by host nation providers. The availability and level of care at host nation medical facilities will vary by location. Movement overseas may require you to initiate a change in your health benefits plan to ensure coverage.
Pay retention may be offered to successful applicants for positions at overseas locations. For this provision to apply to employees already overseas, the selected individual would have to require a permanent change of station move and would have to be selected as a result of a recruitment effort that had been extended outside of the overseas command involved.
