Community Garden Specialist

Scope:

The New Roots Program is an initiative focusing on “food-secure resettlement” in IRC locations throughout the United States. The program helps refugees and political asylees participate in community gardens and navigate local food sources with the aim of greater access to healthy foods and increased community participation. The Community Garden Specialist will perform outreach to clients, and connect them to local growing spaces.

Responsibilities:

Oversee and coordinate day-to-day operations and site maintenance of the New Roots Community Garden, including design and building of garden plots, conducting client assessments and enrollments, facilitating trainings, and assisting with program events e.g. volunteer workdays, garden tours, and media visitsCoordinate client referrals into local community gardens Develop, implement and evaluate gardening workshops and education materials on various relevant topics (i.e. plot preparation, organic gardening, planting/harvesting schedules, agropreneurship opportunities, healthy eating/cooking, etc.)Develop partnerships with local community gardens, farmers markets, and other relevant local agencies focused on urban agriculture and/or food security initiatives. Assist in developing and maintaining a database of client garden placements, gardening materials and resources, and contacts at partnering agencies.Attend biweekly New Roots meetings and present a monthly report to the New Roots team.This position reports to the Health Advocate

Requirements:

Experience in gardening, sustainable/urban agriculture, and/or food security activities requiredKnowledge of Baltimore-area community gardens, preferredDemonstrated experience with community organizing and engagement, preferably with disadvantaged communities and related to food access or healthPrior experience working with refugees and/or immigrant communities preferred, particularly with pre-literate population Grant management experience preferredComputer literacy, preferably with PC systemsExcellent interpersonal and communication skillsA car and valid driver’s licenseIRC leading the way from harm to home.
