Immigration Internship

Agency Mission:

The International Rescue Committee, founded in 1933, is a leading non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict. The IRC has operated as a Washington, D.C. resettlement office since the 1970’s. Recently, as part of a new Maryland State initiative, IRC shifted its main office to Silver Spring, Maryland, to support a wider geographic base and to expand its support to a growing asylee population. The office resettles over 200 refugees annually and assists over 400 asylees, living in Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties, Virginia, and Washington D.C. As a model of one-stop shopping for our resettlement clients and other immigrants, IRC has also established an Immigration Program.

IRC's Immigration Department in Silver Spring, Maryland, provides high quality, low-cost immigration services, including filing applications for adjustment of status (i.e., green cards), work Authorization, naturalization, and family reunification for refugees, asylees, and Victims of Trafficking immigrants. The immigration program internship is an unpaid position with a minimum 3 month commitment. Applicants are required to indicate availability in the application. Part-time or full-time internship available.

Job Description 

Responsibilities:

Technical support for the Immigration Program

Responsible to go through client immigration documents and assist clients about requirements for consultation and application sessions;Answer client questions regarding immigration services, and when necessary refer clients to the appropriate IRC staff member;Research on immigration issues, polices and program;Under the guidance of the immigration program specialist, attend immigration webinars, trainings and networking forums representing the IRC.

Administrative support for the Immigration Program

General administrative support includes tracking, filing, and mailing relevant documents, applications, and notices of action;Under the guidance of the supervising immigration program specialist, assist in putting client information updates in LawLogix data base;Assist clients with document translation, authentication, presentation and completion Provide special assistance to clients with particular needs.

Requirements:

Working towards a college degree related to international relief, humanitarian work or refugee law related subjects. Must be current student or within 6 months of schooling.* Passion to work with diverse and limited-English speaking refugees;Interest and/or work experience on U.S Immigration law (Prior experience in immigration is a plus);Excellent research, language, data base management and record keeping skills.
