Principal roles

Crisis Action is looking for a dynamic individual to lead its engagement with emerging powers including Brazil, India, Turkey, Indonesia and Nigeria on key aspects of their foreign policy related to conflict and human rights. This builds upon the mapping Crisis Action has done over the last few years of individual emerging power countries.

The Emerging Powers Coordinator will be responsible for cultivating and coordinating partner NGOs in emerging powers as part of Crisis Action’s ongoing campaigns to protect civilians in conflict in areas such as Syria, South Sudan and the Central African Republic. You will also lead our engagement with China and Russia and work closely with Crisis Action’s Campaign Director and South Africa Director. You will report to the Deputy Executive Director.

Your responsibilities will include:

Initiate, develop and maintain relationships with key NGOs, think tanks, journalists and policymakers, as well as relevant individuals in the private sector in the countries listed above and act as Crisis Action’s liaison for these marketsAs part of Crisis Action’s campaign teams, lead coordination with partner NGOs in emerging powers, including working with them to produce impactful, market-appropriate advocacy and media products to influence foreign policy to better protect civilians in conflict.Advise and assist in Crisis Action’s future emerging powers engagement, building on the current emerging powers strategy.

Understanding of Crisis Action’s unique catalytic model and ability to identify where it may or may not add value in different emerging marketsProven track-record in advocacy and influencing government policyExperience working in the Global South in at least two of Brazil, India, South Africa, Turkey, Indonesia, Nigeria, China and RussiaStrategic thinker with ability to spot campaign opportunities and excellent political analysisSophisticated ability to work across cultures and understand different perspectiveUnderstanding of human rights, civilian protection and conflict issuesExperience and knowledge of how to use the media and social media to best influence the public and policymakersUnderstanding of different market-appropriate advocacy tactics in emerging powersSuperb inter-personal and communication skills and ability to build relationshipsExperience of working with NGOs with capacity constraints and building coalitions/networksProficiency in working as part of geographically dispersed teamsExcellent project-management skills and high levels of organisation and disciplineFluency in English and at least one other relevant languageAbility to travel extensively and at short noticeSavvy information technology skills

We currently work on two ongoing campaigns (South Sudan/Sudan and Syria) as well as delivering emergency responses to quick onset crises (most recently Gaza and Central African Republic).
