Ni os de Guatemala

The overall mission of the NGO Ni os de Guatemala (NDG) is to help building a better future for Guatemala. NDG s three values are self-sufficiency, a better future through education, and local community. In order to accomplish self-sufficiency, NDG operates amongst others two commercial ventures: The Experience Guatemala Tour and Cambio Spanish School (www.cambiospanishschool.com), both donating all profits to the NGO. To continue its mission, the NGO is looking for a Social Business Manager.

Social Business

Cambio Spanish School (Cambio) is a business start-up, initiated in the beginning of 2013 by NGO Ni os de Guatemala, following the principles of profit-for-non-profit. As a social business, Cambio aims to make a difference in the social development of low-income families in Guatemala as well as to provide high quality Spanish instruction. Through focusing on these objectives, Cambio aims to grow into an important player among Spanish schools in Guatemala.

In addition, Ni os de Guatemala operates a commercial venture called The Experience Guatemala Tour . On this unique tour, tourists visit NDG schools, local businesses, and the community where most NDG children and their families live. The tour generates funds for NDG schools, and participants learn about social issues in Guatemala.

Job description

The Social Business Manager will be in charge of taking the existing organization of both Cambio Spanish School and The Experience Guatemala Tour into the next phase of development: professionalizing, strategizing and growing the business. In addition, the Social Business Manager will be responsible for the expansion of new social businesses initiated by Ni os de Guatemala. The manager will be given a lot of freedom, with the opportunity to manage the businesses as if they were their own.

Responsibilities

Leading the growth and professionalization of Cambio Spanish School. Cambio currently has approximately 7 students per week. The aim is to reach at least 20 students per week and generate an annual revenue of at least $10,000.

Leading the growth and professionalization of The Experience Guatemala Tour, including the further development of the new tour in San Lorenzo el Cubo and improving the existing tour in Ciudad Vieja.

Further developing marketing strategy and executing this strategy, e.g. by focusing on online presence, local and international partnerships and word-of-mouth promotion.

Supervising the operations assistant and (freelance) tour guides.

Supervising the team of freelance teachers of Cambio Spanish School.

Ensuring financial accountability, good administrative procedures and acting as primary liaison with investors.

Quality control over the products and services provided, to ensure an exceptional experience for all customers.

Composing and executing HR strategy and policies, such as recruitment/hiring, training/development and compensation, always taking into account the social commitment Cambio has to all stakeholders.

Back up in the management of the day-to-day activities, administration and operations, as well as back up in the legal representation of Cambio Spanish School.

Researching and developing on new fields of social business for Ni os de Guatemala.

A (young) professional with an entrepreneurial mindset and management experience (preferably in a for-profit context) in the field of organizational development, commercial (project) management, marketing and/or HRM.

Academic background in the sphere of business, management, law, economics or social sciences.

Primary Role:Working with the HOP, the Deputy Head of Program will provide leadership, support and guidance to CRS/GT programming staff responsible for the various grants. S/he will have primary responsibility for ensuring high quality innovation, technical assistance and MEAL (monitoring, evaluation, accountability & learning) for the country program.

Additionally, the DHOP is responsible for assisting the HOP with monitoring grant activities and building staff capacity to ensure programs are implemented and managed in accordance with CRS program quality principles and best practices; that all donor requirements are met and high quality reports produced by responsible staff. S/he will be responsible for coordinating ongoing and new proposal development initiatives ensuring the quality of final documents.

S/he will be based in the Quetzaltenango sub-office, which is a growing office, located in Guatemala s second largest city and close to the western highlands region; the latter being the focus of much of the program portfolio. The position requires a minimum of 50% travel, primarily within Guatemala.
Some limited responsibilities will also be applied in support of the CRS/M xico program (this program office is supervised and supported by the Guatemala office).

Primary Responsibilities:

Lead efforts to identify and ensure capitalization of opportunities for innovation and adaptation of best practices, in support of projects, largely in the areas of agricultural livelihoods, food security, nutrition, education, youth development, migration, water & sanitation and emergencies. Proactively seek out and adapt appropriate program innovations and technologies, through engagement with in-country experiences, as well as via regional and HQ program quality and technical forums. Coordinate and communicate with regional and HQ-based program and technical colleagues regarding innovation identification, adaptation and scale up.Identify and ensure highly effective technical assistance and training for project staff (CRS & partners).Champion monitoring, evaluation, accountability & learning (MEAL), including effective learning system and processes.Ensure quality implementation of CRS/Guatemala s Program Quality objectives designed for each fiscal year, making full use of established systems, standards, staffing and strategies for quality programming;Assist CRS/Guatemala staff in quality and timely reporting, producing polished English documents for external donors.Work with Project Managers and finance staff, to ensure optimal budget management, spending and reporting.Assist CRS/Guatemala in the development of high quality proposals.Collaborate closely with the HOP in the identification of potential funding for CRS/Guatemala and representation of the country program to potential donors.Lead, supervise and mentor staff, as appropriate, including the country program s MEAL manager.Provide support to the CRS/M xico program, as needed.
Specific Responsibilities
Program Quality (30%)Ensure adherence with CRS guiding principles, program quality statement and standards. For example, a key priority is to ensure that gender sensitivity is emphasized in day-to-day operations, in program interventions and with local institutional partners.Ensure full compliance with CRS MEAL Policies and Procedures.Work with program staff to ensure CRS interventions are integrated wherever appropriate. Support the coordination of action plans and activities to ensure complementarity and consistency in the various interventions (e.g. SILC, Faithful House, MEAL).Working with Program Managers and the HOP, support the timely review and finalization of quality progress reports.Support the quality development of scopes of work for technical assistance, training materials/facilitation guides.Support CRS project teams and partners in the development of DIPs and M&E components. Ensure DIP includes both programming events, as well as all management quality focused partner capacity events.Identify and support efforts for productive cross-sector engagement (CSE).

Institutional Learning, Documentation and Sharing (30%)

Actively seek out and incorporate appropriate programming innovations.Lead on pilot project efforts, with the goal of learning, documenting and enhancing impact and scale.Maintain documentation of lessons learned in the Guatemala context and disseminate as appropriate both internally and externally.Lead efforts to seek out and adapt appropriate program innovations and technologies, through engagement with in-country experiences, as well as via regional and HQ program quality and technical forums. Coordinate and communicate with regional and HQ-based program and technical colleagues.Take the lead in the completion of success stories and case studies.Participate actively in the effective use of the Country Program s Sharepoint to ensure that PQ tools, key program documents, reports and calendar of PQ events are accessible to all program managers.

Proposal Development (20%)

Support programming staff in the design of high quality programs through the use of Integrated Human Development (IHD), ProPack and other program quality toolsDevelop PINs, concept papers and proposals in participation with program managers, donors and partners ensuring the use of all program quality toolsParticipate in the review of Project Idea Notes, concept notes and proposals ensuring adherence to ProPack, CRS/PQSD, LACRO and country level best practices.

Partner Capacity Building and Support (20%)

Together with the Head of Program, programming staff and partners, identify capacity building needs for partners and in concert with the Head of Program and Project Managers, ensure that needs are addressed.In collaboration with Head of Program and Project Managers ensure that partners are closely involved in the development of projects; create tools with partners and programming staff that will facilitate communication and relationship buildingIn concert with Head of Program and PMs ensure all partner programming staff is aware of CRS partner principles, overall guiding principles/Catholic Social Teaching and are applied consistently.Together with the Head of Program and Program Managers develop and review required reports and responses to donors in compliance with award provisions and guidelines.Work with the Head of Program & MEAL Manager to provide guidance to CRS staff in the design and enhancement of M&E tools, protocols, surveys and evaluation instruments to strengthen quality data collection, analysis and reporting on projects/programs core indicators.

Consultancy Services for a Disaster Preparedness[1]**Project in Guatemala**

After Southeast Asia, Central America is the region that is the most severely affected by natural disasters in the world, including regular droughts, storms, flooding, landslides and earthquakes. In the last few years, Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe and Caritas international have carried out a range of different projects in the region (e.g. in Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras), each with their respective partners and in the context of their humanitarian assistance mandates. Various activities, such as awareness raising, training and advising all conducted in compliance with local law have improved preparedness for disasters as well as the reduction of risks to disasters on a community level

In order to learn from each other, to forge a coordinated, common approach with the local partners, and to merge instruments, a project concept for a joint project in Guatemala has been submitted for approval to the German Federal Foreign Office based on a proposal from both organizations.

In accordance with this project concept, the two organizations will carry out a joint pilot project in the field of disaster preparedness with three selected local partners.

The primary goal of the project is to "*strengthen skills and promote the use of local knowledge for disaster preparedness at the community and institutional level, and to improve integration and coordination with the responsible authorities and organizations at the regional and national level.*

Under DKH's leadership, Caritas international and DKH are responsible for the administration of the above-mentioned project, as well as for monitoring and reporting to the Federal Foreign Office. Both Caritas international and DKH have developed substantive and conceptual approaches and instruments to be used, extended and adapted as required in the context of this project.

To this purpose, the successful applicant would have the function of a technical consultant (in particular providing on-the-spot support for the implementing partners) according to the provisions of this agreement. This appointment is dependent on the Federal Foreign Office formal approval to provide funds.

The successful applicant provides the following services:

He/She is in charge of the technical implementation of the disaster preparedness (DP) project according to the information provided in the project application, but also in accordance with the DP conditions that prevail in Guatemala. He/She holds regular coordination meetings with the staff responsible at Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe and Caritas international to discuss the substantive implementation of the measures (risk analysis, response plans, development/adaptation of DRR tools, systematization, etc.).

He/She is responsible for elaborating the project reports in accordance with the funding approval and the applicable stipulations of the Federal Foreign Office.

In his/her narrative reporting, the successful applicant uses the Spanish-language reports of the partner organization, merges these according to the reporting standards of the Federal Foreign Office (in German), and clarifies any queries on content with the local partners and Ci/DKH.

The following activities are envisaged:

No.Activities 1 Collects and classifies DKH's and Ci's existing instruments and approaches in the field of disaster management/preparedness and DRR 2 Conducts an institutional analysis of the implementing partners in terms of DRR and preparedness 3 Advises on training needs and training units for all project actors 3 Advises on risk analysis in relation to diverse hazards 4 Advises on action plans and elaboration of communal micro projects 5 Advises on the analysis, adaptation and monitoring of the project partners in the fields of DRR and disaster-management instruments (people-centred approach) 6 Advises on the analysis and adaptation of the global agreements of the Post-2015 Framework for DRR in Guatemala, and of coordination between the local, regional and national disaster-management structures and plans 7 Advises on preparedness (institution wise) activities 8 Systematizes experience gained (booklet) 10 Advises on compiling lessons learnt and best-practice materials 11 Lessons-learnt workshop for working-group preparedness in Germany 12 Processes and consolidates the interim reports for the Federal Foreign Office 13 Processes and consolidates the final reports for the Federal Foreign Office

Products to be created in this context:

1- Customized toolbox (in Spanish brochures, Excel tables, formats, etc., for partners & multipliers at the community level)

2- Booklet (for German-speaking professionals, approx. 20 pages)

3- Training and workshop materials

The work will include stays in Guatemala and talks in Germany (Berlin, Freiburg, Germany)

The successful applicant must meet the following conditions:

Experience with instruments of disaster preparedness and disaster risk reduction (if possible in Central America)

Negotiation-level language skills in Spanish (written and spoken) and German (first language)

Experience of humanitarian aid/previous experience of development policy

Experience with projects financed by the Federal Foreign Office

Willing to work as part of a team; flexible on travel to Guatemala
