Duties & Responsibilities

The Translat or w ill w ork in t he Language Services Unit  of  t he Off ice of  t he Prosecut or,
under t he supervision of t he Language Coordinat or. He or she w ill w ork in a demanding and
high-pressure but  rew arding environment .
The successf ul candidat e w ill be expect ed t o:
- t ranslat e and self -revise document s f rom Kikuyu/Sw ahili int o English, and possibly vice
versa; such document s cover a w ide range of  t opics including,  but  not  limit ed t o,  legal,
milit ary, medical,  f orensic, human right s, administ rat ive and f inancial matt ers;
- proof read and cross-read t he w ork of  colleagues;
- summarize w ritt en or audio/video mat erial in Kikuyu/Sw ahili int o English;
- t ranscribe and qualit y  cont rol audio/video mat erial;
- provide t elephone int erpret at ion bet w een Kikuyu/Sw ahili and English;
- cont ribut e t o t erminology and ref erence dat abases;
- perf orm ot her t asks as required (including administ rat ive and/or IT relat ed t asks).
Essential Qualifications

Educat ion:
A  universit y degree (f rom an accredit ed universit y or inst it ut ion w it h a minimum t hree
years of  st udy) in t ranslat ion,  int erpret at ion,  linguist ics,  law  or any ot her relevant
 subject ;
Experience:
M inimum experience of  seven years in language services (f ive years w it h an advanced degree),
pref erably in an

int ernat ional organizat ion;


Know ledge,  Skills,  and A bilit ies:
-Some specializat ion in t opics dealt  w it h by t he Court , e.g.  legal, milit ary, medical,  f
orensic, human right s, administ rat ive and f inancial matt ers;
- Sound know ledge of  relevant  comput er soft w are,  especially  M S Off ice;
- Proven abilit y t o w ork eff ect ively t o deadlines;
- A n excellent  eye f or det ail,  st yle and usage;
- Organizat ional and t ime management  skills;
- Openness t o skills development .

Know ledge of  languages:
M ot her-t ongue prof iciency in Kikuyu and a near-nat ive command of  Sw ahili and English is
essent ial. Know ledge of  French or anot her Kenyan language may be considered an asset .

-       The select ed candidat e w ill be subject  t o a Personnel Securit y  Clearance (PSC)
process in accordance w it h
ICC policy.  The PSC process w ill include but  w ill not  be limit ed t o, verif icat ion of  t he
