The World Food Programme (WFP) is the world’s largest humanitarian agency, fighting hunger worldwide.
We are currently seeking to fill the position of Engineer, in support of the Regional Bureau for East & Central Africa (RBN), based in Nairobi, Kenya.
The Regional Bureau provides strategic guidance, policy / technical support and direction to WFP operations and activities in nine countries: Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan and Uganda.

Engineer Job Purpose:

  • To provide construction and engineering expertise and contribute to the efficient delivery and quality outputs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the direct supervision of the Senior Engineer, the Engineer will be responsible for the following tasks:
  • Provide technical advice and support on the implementation of WFP policies, standards, norms and practices including procurement procedures related to construction activities and engineering services to ensure that outputs meet the established quality standards and are compliant with wider WFP policies, procedures, guidelines and operations;
  • Provide engineering and project management services, apply best practices, standards and innovative technologies, incorporating country-specific technical requirements that comply with WFP standards and processes;
  • Manage and conduct analysis of project proposals to ensure business case and technical feasibility and that project objectives are attainable within prescribed resources;
  • Conduct engineering site assessments of WFP facilities and develop remedial plans to ensure suitability to operational purposes, safety, and efficiency of structures and equipment in line with WFP policies, criteria and standards;
  • Prepare accurate and timely reporting on outputs to facilitate informed decision-making and consistency of information presented to stakeholders;
  • Provide technical guidance that support a successful construction procurement process;
  • Participate in discussions with partners, donors and stakeholders, exchange knowledge and experience, keeping abreast of construction and engineering technologies, to ensure implementation of innovative engineering solutions;
  • Build the capacity of engineering teams to facilitate the continued development and high performance;
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with internal and external clients to effectively meet clients’ expectations;
  • Contribute to preparedness actions, providing technical recommendations and guidance and monitor the management of risks;
  • Perform other related duties as required

Qualifications and Experience for Engineer Jobs in Kenya

Education:
  • Advanced University degree in Civil Engineering or related Engineering discipline, or First University degree with additional years or experience and/or advanced training/courses.
  • Accreditation to “Professional Engineer” or “Chartered Engineer” status, or recognized equivalent by an appropriate national or international regulatory authority.
  • Experience: At least five years or more of relevant progressively responsible professional experience in management of engineering or construction projects.
Language
  • Fluency in both oral and written communication in English essential.
Competencies
  • Knowledge and experience of public procurement procedures for engineering or construction activities and ability to apply them with limited guidance;
  • Knowledge and experience of applying specialized engineering technologies including GIS, engineering, geotechnical and topographical surveys and assessments;
  • Knowledge and experience of working with FIDIC or MDB construction contract formats;
  • Knowledge and experience of managing aspects of engineering design processes, or on-site construction activities;
  • Knowledge of ‘Health and Safety’ practices and systems in engineering activities;
  • Ability to assimilate and analyze complex issues using independent judgement and anticipate issues;
  • Ability to lead, coach and motivate staff and deliver effectively through others to achieve results;
  • Good commercial understanding, with the ability to leverage external partnerships to optimize resources for WFP;
  • Ability to create simple messages from complex data sets and present concisely, tailoring messages to the needs of the specific audience;
  • Good understanding of business principals and processes and the ability to quickly assimilate UN/WFP specific requirements processes and systems.
Additional desirable knowledge and skills;
  • Knowledge and experience in sustainable design and construction for buildings, including concepts of passive energy designs and use of sustainable materials;
    Knowledge and experience in water and wastewater treatment systems;
  • Experience in fast-paced, dynamic multinational organizations;
  • Willingness to travel in the East and Central Africa region (approximately 25% of time).
