Immigration & Economic Empowerment Intern

Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict.  Domestically, our 22 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency. The National Programs Unit (NPU) brings a high level of technical knowledge and expertise to their work and to the core sectors in which they work. Its goal is to harness existing strengths and to increase U.S. Programs capacity to deliver strategic, high quality programs that can be brought to scale. The NPU engage with field and headquarters’ staff to ensure high quality technical input is integrated into program design, proposal development and ongoing program implementation. NPU’s Economic Empowerment program develops, supports, protects and improves household livelihoods and financial security  for all beneficiaries served in the U.S.  The NPU’s Immigration program delivers direct services for nominal fees to low-income refugees, asylees and others seeking basic benefits such as family reunification, lawful permanent residence, and U.S. citizenship

SCOPE OF INTERN WORK: The intern plays an important role in sourcing, managing and organizing program outcome and financial data needed for a strategic analysis in the development of a sustainable business model for IRC’s Immigration Program.  He or she will also assist the senior technical advisor for economic empowerment to build surveys and collect internal and external program-related data.  

COMMITMENT: Immediate, with a set schedule from 10 to 15 hours per week.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsibilities include organizing quantitative and qualitative program-related data into analytical formats and develop systems and procedures to build consistency in data collection and management.  Additional responsibilities include working with the senior technical advisor to gather program impact from past and current field programs and develop tools and procedures for purpose of analysis. Additional external research on economic, demographic and market data on communities in which IRC field offices reside might also be required.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Student will learn how to effectively build and design informational models for analysis.Student will learn how to use data to inform program outcomes.

REQUIREMENTS:

Current or recently matriculated graduate student in business or public administration, policy evaluations, economics or computer science.  Proven experience with data analysis and reporting.Ability to identify anomalies, trends, inconsistencies and make recommendations to improve processes workflow and operations.Advance skill level in Microsoft Access and Excel.
