Hunger Reduction and Livelihoods is one of six strategic priorities for Save the Children (UK), along with New Born Child Survival, Education in Crisis, Child Protection, Accountability to Children and UK Child Poverty.

Our work in Hunger Reduction and Livelihoods aims to reduce child poverty and improve the resilience of families to cope with disasters, focusing on countries with a high burden of undernutrition and exposure to risk. Our food security and livelihoods advisers develop projects, programmes and research activities aimed at building resilient livelihoods to improve tangible well-being outcomes for children (food and nutrition security, financial access to basic services, and reduction in harmful child labour).

We work with children and families are increasing our focus on working with adolescent girls and boys to improve their skills and access to opportunities as they make the transition into adulthood. We recognise that youth unemployment, a key factor in the well-being of today’s teenagers and tomorrow’s parents, and is a growing and increasingly urgent challenge across the world. We recognise that working with young people as this stage of their lifecycle is essential to break the inter-generational transfer of poverty.

Job purpose:

In this exciting position you will play a key role guiding our livelihoods work forward, with a strong focus on supporting adolescents to realise their potential. You will develop your technical skills, e.g. applying the household economy approach and cost of diet tools, and your leadership capability.

You will lead the design and support implementation of high quality livelihood programmes to directly improve children’s lives and generate evidence and approaches to influence policies that reduce child poverty and malnutrition on a larger scale. In particular, you will lead the design of market development programmes aimed at delivery impact on children’s well-being and on improving the livelihood opportunities of young people.

About you

We are looking to recruit someone who has experience developing and implementing livelihoods programmes, with demonstrable thematic expertise in market development and/or youth livelihoods.

You will have a proven track record of institutional fundraising success, either for research or programming and be able to demonstrate sound strategic thinking and planning skills, including the ability to think creatively and innovate and to set priorities, manageable workplans and evaluate progress

The ideal candidate must be willing/ability to travel, including to fragile field locations as needed, for up to 30% of time.

In return we offer a salary of £37,000- £39,000 + pension, training and structure career development.
