Duty Location: Atlanta VA Medical Center in Decatur, GA

The employee will serve as a Health Science Specialist (Research Compliance Auditor) for the Human Research Protection Program (HRPP), of the Atlanta VA Medical Center. You will report directly to the Research Compliance Officer (RCO).

You will be responsible for using audit tools to perform a large volume of ongoing auditing of informed consent forms and at times will assist the Compliance Officer with all areas of research compliance including human, animal and bench science research. Review study records regularly and in detail. You must be very organized, able to multi-task and have detailed auditing skills. You will assist with regular research protocol audits to ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. Audits must be performed before set deadlines and on and ongoing basis.You will provide the Compliance Officer with regular updates and reports on the status of audits. You will perform a variety of administrative duties assigned by the RCO to maintain specialized data and verify compliance in design and conduct of approved research studies. You will possess a broad knowledge of the interrelated federal and state laws and regulations governing the areas of protection of human subjects research, protection of animal subjects in research, biosafety, and data security as well as comprehensive knowledge of VA administrative research policies, directives, and guidelines. Assess appropriateness of candidates enrolled in research projects based onseveral factors; such as eligibility according to study protocol, execution of informed consent, and compliance with research guidelines and regulations. Assist the RCO in the review and evaluations of on-going compliance in research programs and provides recommendations for program strategies or modifications. Position may require periods of walking to several areas throughout the facility in order to obtain materials in order to perform audits. At times, you will also identify, develop, and disseminate audit tools and mechanisms to assure compliance with Veterans Affairs, Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs, Inc. (AAHRPP), Office of Human Research Protection (OHRP), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and other federal and state regulations applicable to research.

The RCA will assist in ensuring regulatory and policy updates and disseminates to investigators and research staff in a timely manner. You must be able to function in high pressure environments and effectively address multiple competing priorities, frequently involving difficult problem resolution. Other duties will be assigned as time permits by the Research Compliance Officer in order to accomplish projects, and program assignments.

Work Schedule: 8 :00 am - 4:30 pm

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

Possess a Bachelor's degree with major study in an academic field related to the health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of this position. (UNOFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)

Specialized Experience or Substitution of Education for Experience:

In addition to meeting the basic education requirement, you must have (1) one year of specialized experience which equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. Specialized experience would be experience such as planning, implementation and oversight of a compliance program for Research and Development; ensuring that regulatory and policy updates from external regulatory agencies are in compliance; providing guidance and direction on the incorporation of quality assurance/quality management in the research program; and monitoring and auditing of all areas or research compliance, including human subjects research, animal research and research biosafety. This experience must be comparable to the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service. NOTE: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

OR

Possess 3 full years of progressively higher level education or Ph.D or equivalent doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with a major in a related field. If you are basing your qualifications on education (or a combination of education and experience) or if the position requires a college education to qualify, you must submit a copy of your transcripts with your application)

OR

Possess an equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate level of education as (described above) to meet total experience. To calculate the combination of education and experience, determine the amount of experience you have as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level. Then determine the amount of education you have as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. Add the two percentages; the total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify for the grade level.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The work is sedentary. However, there is periodic walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items such as medical records, instructional material, books, and manuals. No special physical demands are required to perform the work. in nature.
