Linguist/editor (English)

Under the supervision of the Senior Editor/Linguist (English), and in accordance with the OPCW Core Values of Integrity, Professionalism and Respect for Diversity/Gender Equality, the incumbent performs the following duties:

TRANSLATION
Translates into the Sections language official OPCW documents on political, technological, legal, financial, administrative and scientific subjects.
Translates into Sections language confidential OPCW documents.
Self-revises translated texts and revises translations prepared by free-lance and contractual translators for consistency in terminology.

EDITING
Edits official-series documents issued by the Secretariat, including notes and reports by it and by the Director-General, decisions of the policy-making organs, reports of the subsidiary bodies, and major annual reports.
As required, also edits a variety of other texts, including external speeches, notes verbales, and correspondence by the Director-General.
Identifies, and reformulates or deletes, material likely to have adverse consequences for the Secretariat or the OPCW, disambiguates unclear formulations, corrects substantive errors, checks references for both correctness and appropriateness, and generally ensures that edited text is clear, concise, grammatically correct, readable, idiomatic, and rhetorically and politically appropriate.
Exceptionally - that is, in the absence of the Senior Editor/Linguist - finalises documents.

OTHER RELATED DUTIES, INCLUDING TERMINOLOGY
Undertakes terminological research necessary to solve problems of terminology and meaning, prepares glossaries, technical vocabularies and related technical tools and develops new terminology for use where terminological equivalents do not exist in the Sections language; maintains and updates the terminological database.
Participates in consultations with substantive units concerning manifest or possible inconsistencies or errors in the original text.
Keeps abreast of politically sensitive and technically complex issues, developments and terminology.
Strictly complies with the OPCW confidentiality regime and performs all relevant procedures.
Performs supervisory functions and participates in recruitment interviews for linguistic staff as necessary in the absence of the Senior Editor/Linguist.

Knowledge and Skills

Education (Qualifications):

Essential:
Advanced degree or equivalent qualification, preferably in translation or interpretation, from a university or an institution of equivalent status;
High level skill and ability in translation (general, specialised, and technical subjects);
Computer literacy, including knowledge and ability to work with Windows-compatible word-processing equipment;

Desirable:
Knowledge of the Chemical Weapons Convention and related disarmament and technical issues, as well as an understanding of international affairs, is desirable.

Experience

Essential:
A minimum of five years of relevant work experience, including translation, preferably within the United Nations system with an advanced degree (or seven years with a first level degree). Experience in the field of editing is desirable.

Desirable:
Work experience in a political or an international environment.

Languages

Perfect command of the English language, both written and spoken, which must be a first language;
A good working knowledge of at least two other
official language of the OPCW (Arabic, Chinese,
French, Russian, Spanish)
