 The VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System is seeking highly skilled and experienced Registered Nurses for our various wards within our Medical-Surgical areas.These RN positions will be under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager of the ward to which assigned.   He/she is responsible for the delivery of patient care in assigned areas based on scientific principles and the nursing process, and functions as a leader by assuming additional responsibility for improvement of patient care.

Tour of Duty: Various-Day, Evenings or Night Shifts (with Evening, Night and Weekend rotations)

Must be proficient in written and spoken EnglishAs a Staff Nurse you will provide prescribed medical treatment and personal care services to ill and injured veterans.  Duties include documenting observations, assessments, and changes in patient's condition; collaborating with health team members to facilitate positive patient care outcomes; providing a full range of nursing care to patients with a variety of physical and/or behavior problems; and accountable for meeting and maintaining the qualification standards and functional statements of assigned grade.  Our facility is seeking individuals who possess good organizational skills which enable completion of work, a demonstrated ability to assume leadership in a patient centered program, and the ability to establish effective communication with patients, families, visitors and members of the interdisciplinary team.

Relocation expenses will not be reimbursed.

Job duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Assures detailed, current and comprehensive documentation is contained in the patient medical record and other pertinent records. 

2. Utilizes human and material resources to provide efficient and effective patient care. 

3. Continuously monitors the environment for potential and/or actual safety hazards.  Assures adherence to strict safety procedures by all staff.   

4. Guides and directs patient care delivery of support staff.   Provides input for staff evaluation to rating official(s). 

5. Participates in and initiates Quality Assessment and Improvement program activities as applicable to the clinical area.   

6. Promotes collaborative practice to provide and expedite quality patient care along the health care continuum; acts as patient advocate to assure appropriateness and quality of care.  

7. Assesses learning needs of patients and staff and implements appropriate teaching plan.  

8. Initiates and/or participates in studies pertaining to the ward assigned.   

9. Collaborates with other healthcare professionals in providing continuity of services for specific health issues.

10. Improves continuity of professional relationships among the healthcare teams as they collaborate on behalf of patients. 

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:   

U.S. citizenship.  Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration requiredGraduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:  The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).  In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.  The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing.  Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.  

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:    

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association, American Red Cross or Military Training Network
Preferred Experience:

One year of successful RN experience preferred. Demonstrated evidence of self-direction and organizational skills. Demonstrated evidence of excellent interpersonal skills. Demonstrated evidence of effectively educating patients and patient families.  GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel.

Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization;Professional Development: performance, education/career development; Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality;Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.

·         Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.

Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The candidate may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The candidate may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs.  The candidate will be working closely with others and may have protracted or irregular hours of work.
