Welcome
to the United Nations
The United Nations is central to global
efforts to solve problems which challenge humanity. Cooperating in this effort are more
than 30 affiliated organizations, known together as the UN system. Day in and day out, the
UN and its family of organizations work to promote respect for human rights, protect the
environment, fight disease, foster development and reduce poverty. UN agencies define the
standards for safe and efficient transport by air and sea, help improve telecommunications
and enhance consumer protection, work to ensure respect for intellectual property rights
and coordinate allocation of radio frequencies. The United Nations leads the international
campaigns against drug trafficking and terrorism. Throughout the world, the UN and its
agencies assist refugees and set up programmes to clear landmines, help improve the
quality of drinking water and expand food production, make loans to developing countries
and help stabilize financial markets.
English and French are the two working languages of the United
Nations Secretariat. The United Nations
Secretariat is a non-smoking environment. The United Nations are seeking qualified collaborators in different professional categories. The United Nations shall place no restrictions on the eligibility of men and women to participate in any capacity and under conditions of equality in its principal and subsidiary organs. UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, brings together the efforts and resources of ten UN system organizations to the global AIDS response.
Cosponsors include UNHCR, UNICEF, WFP, UNDP, UNFPA, UNODC, ILO, UNESCO, WHO and the World Bank. Based in Geneva, the UNAIDS secretariat works on the ground in more than 75 countries world wide.
Careers at UNAIDS
As the leading advocate for worldwide action against HIV/AIDS, the global mission of UNAIDS is to lead, strengthen and support an expanded response to the epidemic that will:
- prevent the spread of HIV
- provide care and support for those infected and affected by the disease
- reduce the vulnerability of individuals and communities to HIV/AIDS
- alleviate the socioeconomic and human impact of the epidemic.
The staff of UNAIDS make up the main resource of the Programme and as such the paramount consideration in selecting and appointing staff is required to ensure the highest standards of efficiency, competence and integrity.
Selection of staff shall be without regard to race, creed or sex and, so far as is practicable, selection of staff shall be made on a competitive basis.
The medical criterion for recruitment is fitness to work in the particular post. The United Nations HIV/AIDS Personnel Policy clearly stipulates that no staff and/or potential candidates shall be discriminated against on the basis of real or perceived HIV status. HIV infection, in itself, does not constitute lack of fitness to work. There is no obligation to disclose HIV-related personal information.
The recruitment of candidates for fixed-term posts (normally two years) and short-term openings (more than six months and less than one year) at various levels within the Professional category is generally effected through vacancies published on our Internet site and the ICSC Bulletin.
Candidates are requested to carefully review the miminum requirements for advertised posts before making a decision to apply. These minimum requirements are stipulated on each vacancy announcement. Due to the volume of applications received only those candidates who are under serious consideration will be contacted.
Vacancies for posts in the General Service category are advertised within UNAIDS and can be accessed at the UNAIDS Human Resources Office. These are usually filled by local candidates, i.e. candidates residing in the Geneva area or in neighbouring France.
UNAIDS also runs an Internship programme, whose objective is to provide an opportunity for university students to acquire a working knowledge of UNAIDS and to be exposed to the work of the Programme.
