Legal Officer


The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) is a partnership that works with governments, donors, NGOs, the private sector, and African farmers to significantly and sustainably improve the productivity and income of resource-poor farmers in Africa. Founded and initially funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation, AGRA supports interventions aimed at improving seed systems, soil fertility, input and output markets, policies, and other priority sectors, with the overall objective of reducing food insecurity.


AGRA aims to achieve these goals by: supporting and building capability of farmers and enterprises across the agricultural value chain; being a thought-leader on African agriculture by collecting, packaging, and disseminating knowledge; and creating strong partnerships with public, private, and donor actors to drive change within the sector. AGRA is headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, and is opening several country-based offices.

AGRA is seeking to recruit an exceptional individual to fill the position of Legal Officer.
This position will report to the General Counsel under the President’s directorate and will be responsible for identifying and managing legal risk, leading the compliance function and providing direction and focus while proactively advising and educating the organization on relevant legal issues.
This position is nationally recruited and will be based in Nairobi, Kenya on a three (3) year renewable contract.

Key responsibilities will include:

  •  Formulating and developing legal strategies and plans to ensure adherence to legal and policy guidelines that promote good corporate governance;
  •  Providing legal advisory services to the organization and ensuring that all activities are in line with the applicable laws, including compliance matters which may pose financial or reputational risks;
  •  Ensuring that all aspects of legal risk are identified, covered and mitigated in the implementation of new projects, systems, and procedures;
  •  Advising on development and revision of processes, policies and procedures designed to reduce legal risk and/or increase efficiency of the organization;
  •  Drafting, reviewing and negotiating agreements to which AGRA is a party, including tenders, grant agreements, contracts for goods and services and collaborative memoranda of understanding;
  •  Researching and preparing legal papers and reports on issues of importance to AGRA;
  •  Assisting the General Counsel in providing oversight on work assigned to external lawyers;
  •  Managing the organization’s fixed assets contracts within the legal and regulatory context;
  •  Serving on the organization’s disciplinary committee (as convened by the Human Resources department); and
  •  Preparing and delivering compliance education and training to employees to build risk awareness within the organization.
  • Key qualifications, knowledge and experience required:
  •  A Bachelor of Laws degree from a recognized university and admission to the Bar in Kenya. A Master’s degree will be an added advantage;
  •  A minimum of ten (10) years’ relevant post-qualification legal experience;
  •  At least five (5) years’ experience in a not-for-profit setting will be considered a distinct advantage;
  •  Proficiency in the use of standard computer software applications; and
  •  Knowledge of French and/or Portuguese will be an advantage.
