Background
GVEP (Global Village Energy Partnership) International
works to increase the effectiveness of
energy product/service providers by supporting micro, small and medium enterprises to
strengthen, expand and diversify their businesses, and improve their ability to raise capital
and scale-up. To do this, GVEP provides high-quality financial, technology, engineering and
project management services. Over 4-million people have benefited from our programmes
in Africa.
Recently, GVEP has decided to move to a matrix management system to better support
project delivery. The African Regional Director will be responsible for managing a number of
country teams plus specialist staff who will provide services to project managers and
participate in the delivery of projects. The post holder will work closely with the Head of
Advisory Services and the Programme Director, the two other key operational managers
who also report to the CEO.
The role also involves external representation of GVEP at a high level in the media, and with
donors, potential funders and government representatives.
Purpose and Scope of the Position
o A member of GVEPs senior leadership team who will play a key role in shaping the
organisation’s culture. They will lead role in building a sense of mission and purpose
amongst staff in Africa;
o The line manager of country managers and teams (currently in Kenya, Uganda,
Tanzania, Senegal and Rwanda). These teams support project managers to deliver
the target outcomes defined in donor contracts;
o Manages Human Resources, IT and Finance Functions;
o Is responsible for the operational budget for Africa, this includes developing an annual
budget, and managing expenditure in line with budget.
o Will ensure finance, procurement and HR policies are kept up to date and are
understood and followed by Africa based staff;
o Will support new business development in East and West Africa, helping to secure new
funding contracts for GVEP;
o Presentation of GVEPs work to the media, funders and other actors in the energy access
arena.
Role
o Help build a coherent culture and sense of mission in GVEP based on the organisation’s
values;
o Direct responsibility for management of regional activities and budget;
o Overall responsibility for performance of country teams and specialist support staff;
o Plan and coordinate allocation of staff to projects, and ensure sufficient numbers of
appropriately qualified staff are recruited to support the projects in the portfolio;
o Communicate regularly with the CEO, peers, middle managers and staff to ensure day to
day operations are kept on track. Motivate teams to perform;
o Help manage growth and change within GVEP, as new projects come on stream and
others end;
o Responsible for consolidating and reinforcing the capacity of individual managers and
their teams;
o Ensure systems of knowledge sharing and professional development exist within and
across teams;
o Budgeting, planning, and reporting with costs fully recovered from project budgets.
Requirements/Competencies
o Experience with leading and growing an organisation in Africa;
o Prior exposure to matrix management desirable;
o Demonstrable success in managing a large team of staff to achieve results;
o The ability to manage in diverse cultural environments and bring people together;
o Energetic, enthusiastic , positive outlook;
o Experience of operating context in Africa;
o Qualifications in energy or business management, MBA or equivalent;
o Commercial experience preferred; high level of financial competence
o Excellent communication, interpersonal and influencing skills;
o Strategic problem solver, pragmatic and results oriented;
o Committed leader with strong people management skills;
o Strong ethical and professional values;
o Team player, capable of working effectively and productively with other managers;
o Ambitious, we are looking for this individual to be a potential successor to the CEO.
