Serves as an in-depth technical specialist providing technical support for one or more of the FAA Academy's complex systems: FAA's EnRoute Automation Modernization System (ERAM). Provides the highest organizational level of technical support associated with analyzing, designing, developing, installing, repairing, fabricating, maintaining, modifying or evaluating the most complex Automation or Communication Systems used for FAA Academy training. Applies broad experience and comprehensive technical knowledge of assigned disciplines and specialties, an understanding of new technologies and methods, and FAA policies and programs. Applies nonprofessional engineering principles and practices in the field of electronics design, construction and maintenance. Must be knowledgeable in related fields of mechanical and electrical engineering. Must be able to perform system alignment, calibration, malfunction analysis, modification and system certification according to FAA specifications. Provides guidance to other technicians and trainees regarding difficult technical or operational issues. Performs other duties as assigned. Incumbent is required to interact with personnel from the FAA Academy, FAA Logistics Center, Air Traffic Organization (ATO) or other Government agencies. May be required to work rotating shifts and weekends.

Qualification Standard: Individual Occupational Requirements for GS-856, Electronics Technician Series, along with the Group Coverage Qualification Standard for Technical and Medical Support Positions.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: To qualify for this position at the FV-I level, applicants must have at least 52 weeks of Specialized Experience equivalent to the (FV-H/ FG-12) level in the Federal Service that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position.

Specialized experience may include but not limited to: experience analyzing, designing, developing, installing, repairing, fabricating, maintaining, modifying or evaluating most complex Automation or Communication Systems, knowledge of mechanical and electrical engineering, or experience with the installation, configuration and maintenance of UNIX and Windows operating systems, computers, servers, network administration, system administration and telecommunications.

Qualifications must be met by the closing date of this vacancy announcement.

Evaluation Criteria

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA)
1. Practical Application of Information Technology Skills. Demonstrates technical skill in the installation, configuration and maintenance of UNIX and Windows operating systems, computers, servers, network administration, system administration and telecommunications. Experience providing technical support of UNIX based software platforms, specifically AIX and/or LINUX operating systems is required.
2. Knowledge of Electronic and Information Technology Theory. Demonstrates knowledge of electronic and information technology theory, sound troubleshooting skills, principles, and techniques. Include all relevant experience, education, and training.
3. Ability to resolve complex system technical problems as they arise and make adjustments as necessary to deal with system outages and performance deterioration.
4. Establishes maintenance policies, maintenance procedures and develops recommendations for system enhancement.
5. Ability to work effectively with others. Demonstrates ability to effectively lead or complete a task or project in a team environment. Demonstrates ability to utilize human relation and problem-solving skills to assist co-workers in solving task/project related problems or issues.
