Haiti: English language teacher

Reports to:Human Resources Manager and Volunteer Coordinator

Duration:4 to 6 months

Location of position:Port-au-Prince, Haiti

Background:

J/P Haitian Relief Organization (J/P HRO) recognizes how essential its employees are to realizing the J/P HRO mission, and as such will provide training and development opportunities to all eligible employees. In this context language is understood as the interaction system for communicating messages at work whether verbal, non-verbal or cultural.

As part of J/P HRO strategic goals to enhance staff capacity building among the organization, we seek to provide training on foreign languages to both international and national staff.

Description of the role:

J/P HRO is recruiting an English native speaker volunteer to develop and teach a training course for our local staff. This course must ensure participants achieve general linguistic competence covering written and oral comprehension, and expression.

Responsibilities:

1) Provide a ‘Course Description’ (syllabus) for the English classes indicating:

· The teaching objectives of the course in terms of communicative language, stating the level of skills to be acquired in:

Listening;Spoken;Reading;Writing;

· The linguistic content of the course with a view to reaching the above objectives:

Linguistic skills;Lexical skills;Grammatical skills;

· The method for assessing participants and the course in connection with the above-mentioned objectives:

At the start of training;During training;At the end of training;
2) Develop teaching materials and share them with Human Resources.

3) Agree on a timetable with Human Resources.

4) Test candidates for admission and assess their levels.

5) Teach students of English language 6 hours per week.

6) Submit timely reports (e.g. records of attendance and absence, the content of each lesson, the results of continuous assessment and the final test.)

7) Ensure that the list of topics to be covered during each lesson, and the activities to be carried out (exercises and correction, audio and video material used etc.) are accessible.

8) Submit to the organization copies of the final test results (Results of listening comprehension and written score per employee) to certify the level reached or the skills acquired by participants at the end of the course.

9) Provide a final report about the course implementation.

Qualifications and Experience:

4-year degree, Education or English preferred.English as a first or native languageStrong organizational and problem-solving skills.Excellent communication skills and ability to work under pressure and in a multicultural environment.Proactive work ethic, ability to work independently extensively as well as within a team
