Tower Mechanic (Part-time: 3 days a week), UNDSS - (Open to Nepalese Nationals only) - Kathmandu

The position is locally administered by UNDP and is funded from the cost-shared security budget from UN agencies in Nepal. The position functions under overall supervision of Security Adviser, DSS Nepal on behalf of the Security Management Team of the UN Agencies in Nepal.

UNDSS on behalf of UN Security Management System (UNSMS) is operating Emergency Operation Center (EOC) to implement Nepal Minimum Operating Security Standard (MOSS). EOC are equipped with Emergency Communication Equipments like HF, VHF, and Satellite Phone etc.

There are three 24/7 EOC and four standby EOC throughout the country. And there are about 25 repeater stations throughout the country. Most of the VHF repeater stations have been installed at Nepal Telecom (NTC) premises and most of them are located in the hilltop. Most of the NTC towers are more than 60metres in height. It requires experienced Tower Maintenance personnel to install antenna supporting elements and radio antenna in the NTC tower on regular basis. The regular installation, maintenance and relocation of telecom mast in radio room sites are also must to maintain the country emergency communication system (ECS).

Under the direct supervision of the Radio Telecommunication Assistant (RTA) in Nepal, the Tower Mechanic will be responsible primarily to:

Assist RTA to establish VHF towers and VHF repeater stations in different parts of Nepal with installing proper A/C & D/C power, solar system, secondary batteries and accessories; Assist RTA to establish and refurbish radio rooms with installing HF, VHF, sat phones, feeder cables, AC/DC power supply and antenna; Assist RTA to erect and dismantle antenna supporting elements for the installation of HF/VHF radio, Sat Phone antenna, & VSAT microwave antenna in Standalone place and/or NTC towers; Under the guidance of RTA, establish robust earthing system for radios and towers whenever and wherever required; Assist RTA to install and dismantle VHF/HF radios from or into UN vehicles; Assist RTA to keep record of ECS equipments and store and maintain them with proper custodianship; Assist RTA to issue and receive the ECS equipments from store room; Perform other tasks assigned by the RTA.

Impact of the results:

The impact of the results of the work of this position will help to maintain the effective Emergency Communication System (ECS) in the country. Eventually, this will enable UN personnel and dependants’ safety and security.
Skill/Knowledge on installation, dismantling and climbing high tower and antenna elements; Some knowledge of electrical equipments/wiring; Knowledge on HF, VHF and Satellite phone will be an added advantage; Ability to work under pressure; Displays harmonious & cooperative spirit with colleagues; Display cultural, gender, religion, race, nationality & age sensitivity and adaptability; Demonstrate a commitment to the UN mission, vision & values; Some knowledge and understand of the UN security policies preferred.

Academic Qualifications::

Experience:

Minimum 3 years work experience on metal wielding and/or tower maintenance; Prior experience with UN or INGO is desirable.

Language Requirements:

English language is not the requirement but some understanding level is preferred;Fluent Nepali language is a must.
