Communications Officer

Communicate pertinent information on WHO goals, policies, programs, guidelines and activities to the media and other stakeholders through suitable formats (print, web, broadcast, social media etc) in English, French and Portuguese languages;
Strengthen public and programs communications related to technical cooperation between WHO and Member States as well as development partners, including the media;
Provide communication support to technical programs and WCOs, and undertake internal communication, and define and promote a consistent corporate identib/for WHO Jnt. e. . malJy and externaJJy;
Liaise with the local, regional and international media to ensure informed and accurate coverage of WHO activities and programs.
Contribute to managing WHO's reputation by monitoring public opinion and concerns
Undertake strategic communications response to epidemics and pandemics, public health emergencies and for the health aspects of humanitarian crises.

Description of duties:

Writing:
Write presentations, talking points and other written communications products ensuring that the materials conform to the WHO Style Guide, Write articles, op-eds, feature stories, brochures and other written communications products as needed to support the work of the Clusters and the entire Organization, Contribute to discussions and decisions on the messaging and positioning of the Organization in written products.
Assist with writing comm unications products for the media team as needed.

Editing:
Edit and re-write portions of technical documents, along with products wdtten by other team members and provide constructive feedback to improve the accuracy and quality of the products.
Supporting other Units e. g. TIP in editing of English documents

Surge capacity:
Provide communications surge capacity as needed in the case of public health or humanitarian emergencies or in other situations, and conduct comm unications training as required and as other tasks permit.

Project management:
Oversee specific projects as required by Regional Communications Adviser, such as videos, brochures and other publications.

Focal point for Cluster
Act as the liaison between technical units (as assigned), and the CAM Unit, regularly attending Cluster meetings; Proactively keep abreast of success stories, upcoming events and other potentially significant developments in the Clusters covered so that content that could be developed for both off- and online dissemination; Keep up to date on latest public health developments in the area of work assigned to as focal point.
Ensure communications plans and strategies are developed for events as needed.
Ensure the timely production of "talking points' and other written products and oversee required clearance processes; Contribute to the writing of media products for the cluster as needed.

Other duties as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
University degree in communications, journalism, public health, marketing, political or international relations.

Skills:

Solid writing skills in a variety of styles and under deadline pressure in English, including audio and audio-visual scripts;
Ability to develop messaging and positioning for an international organization;
Demonstrated networking skills, excellent interpersonal skills, ability to multitask, ability to prioritize competing priorities;
Thorough understanding of public health and international development issues.
Ability to elicit and communicate success stories.
Ability to transform technical information for different target audiences

Experience:

At least 5 years' experience working in communications or a communications-related field with a focus on researching, writing and editing text for speeches, articles, feature stories, video or radio scripts talking points and media products.
Proven experience writing text under deadline pressure; Experience working with a public relations company, the media or with communications for an international organization preferred.

Desirable:
Experience working in global public health issues Experience working in multilingual environment

Languages:

Excellent knowledge of English or French and working knowledge of the other. Knowlege of Portuguese will be an advantage.

Annual salary:
(Net of tax)

USD 56, 091 at single rate
USD 60, 091 with primary dependants

Post Adjustment:
65. 3 % of the above figure(s). This percentage is to be considered as indicative since variations may occur each month either upwards or downwards due to currency exchange rate fluctuations or inflation.
