Youth Caseworker Intern

BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. Domestically, our 22 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.

SCOPE OF WORK: The Youth Caseworker Intern assists the Caseworker-Youth with providing case management services for newly arrived refugee youth as part of the Refugee Youth Project. The Refugee Youth Project is a joint program of IRC Baltimore, Baltimore City Community College (BCCC) and Soccer Without Borders that seeks to improve educational outcomes and social adjustment for refugee students.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Assist with the coordination and facilitation of student, parent and community meetings focusing on health, parenting skills, changes in the school system, bullying prevention, and preventative mental health support groups

Assist refugees with school vaccinations and follow-up appointments

Assist with providing transportation for clients to appointments and meetings

Assist with case file preparation

Provide general administrative support

This position reports to: Caseworker- Youth

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Gain an understanding of the resettlement process for refugees, as well as background information from the countries of origin where clients come from.Strengthen partnerships with Baltimore City and County Public Schools through youth case management services provided to clients. Increase knowledge of evidence-based youth programming that focus on refugee youth, psychosocial support, and parental engagement and contribute to business development opportunities.

REQUIREMENTS:

Reliable and flexible; Access to a car strongly preferred. 

Excellent communication skills

Organized with attention to detail

Able to work independently and under pressure in a fast-paced environment

Strong desire to help people and enthusiasm for working in a multi-cultural setting

Computer literacy – preferably with PC systems

Experience working with youth, specifically in the context of educational and social programs is highly desirable. 

Experience doing research and literature reviews

Experience working with refugee and/or immigrant populations highly desirable. 

Fluency in English.  Bilingual or multilingual ability preferred.

Possess reliable transportation, valid US driver’s license, and active insurance policy.

TIME COMMITMENT:

Fall and Spring interns are required to work at least 15 hours per week, Monday through Friday, for a minimum of 12 weeks.
