Civics & Citizenship Teacher

Position: Civics and Citizenship Volunteer Teacher

Reports to: Family Education Coordinator

Term: April 21 - August 27, 2014

Hours: 6-hours/week: Mondays and Tuesdays 4:30pm - 7:30pm

BACKGROUND:

Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict.  Domestically, our 23 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.

The IRC New York Resettlement office’s Adult Education program provides free classes and educational services to our adult clients. These individuals, mainly refugees and asylees, are legal immigrants who are victims of war, persecution, and civil conflict. They have diverse cultural and educational backgrounds. Moreover, they are highly adaptable, usually multilingual, and eager to start rebuilding their lives in America. At the IRC, they may enroll in on-site English and Citizenship classes, attend cultural orientation sessions, participate in workshops, and register for external educational opportunities.

SCOPE OF WORK

The Civics and Citizenship Class Coordinator acts as the liaison between the immigration department and the family education department. The coordinator will be responsible for the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of Citizenship and Civics services provided by the IRC in New York.  The Citizenship and Civics Coordinator will oversee volunteer tutors, meet with clients, assess students, and manage data. 

RESPONSIBILITES

Prepare Civics & Citizenship lesson plans 4:30 - 5:30pm using IRC's USCIS teaching materialsTeach in Citizenship classes Mondays and Tuesday 5:30 – 6:30pm using IRC’s USCIS teaching materialsFacilitate one-on-one pairings, directing tutors and students to appropriate learning activitiesSupervise 5 – 10 volunteer tutors

REQUIREMENTS

MA in Education with TESOL CertificationExperience working with adult learners from a variety of cultural and linguistic groupsWorking with refugee populations in a resettlement context highly desired. Experience designing student-centered, thematic-based curriculum and developing monitoring and evaluation systems highly desired.  Must have excellent communication and organizational skills and a good sense of humor.  Demonstrated ability to work independently and stay on task in a fast-paced environment.Must be comfortable interacting with individuals from a variety of cultural backgrounds and work as part of a team to ensure proactive, quality services to clientsAbility to speak one or more other languages is an advantage.
