ILRI seeks to recruit a Research Technician for Brachiaria Grasses Research Program funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) to provide technical support on laboratory, growth chamber, greenhouse and field research on Brachiaria grasses and associated fungal and bacterial endophytes. This position involves 20% of the field work often during hot, dry and wet weather.

It consists of a Hub based on the ILRI campus in Nairobi, Kenya and a network of regional nodes and other affiliated laboratories and organizations throughout the region. The BecA Hub facilities are world class, including a range of molecular, plant transformation, and genomics laboratories and equipment (e.g. 454 and Illumina next generation sequencing, Biosafety level 3 laboratory, plant growth facilities). The Hub hosts and conducts research in crop, microbe and livestock areas where new developments in science offer promise to address previously intractable problems constraining Africa’s development.  Capacity building is a major goal of all activities. Responsibilities
  • Collection of plant materials from greenhouse and natural environment, surface sterilization of plant materials, microbial isolations, purification of microbial cultures, DNA extraction, PCR amplification, nucleic acid quantification, DNA sample preparation for sequencing and sequence data analysis.
  • Evaluation of microbes for potential agricultural applications. This includes microbial inoculum preparation, plate based assays, plant inoculation, and monitoring plant growth and development in laboratory, growth chamber and greenhouse environments.
  • Preparation and curation of microbial cultures for routine and long term uses.
  • Execution of field experiments that include land and seed bed preparation, field layout, planting/transplanting, weeding, irrigation, application of fertilizers and pesticides, other intercultural operations and data recording.
  • Collection of soil and plant samples for microbial and nutritional analyses.
  • Assist in laboratory and field trainings.
  • Follow good laboratory practices, and help in the preparation and refinement of SOPs.
  • Coordinate with the lab manager and ILRI engineering to ensure that laboratories and equipment are in good working order.
  • Analyze research data; prepare progress reports, presentations and manuscripts for publication in referred journals.
  • Participate in institutional trainings and seminars.
  • Conduct other research activities as directed by Principal Investigator.
Requirements
  • BSc. degree with  3 years experience in biological sciences or MSc. with limited post masters experiences with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experiences in microbiology, molecular biology, greenhouse and field based plant sciences research and assessment of plant fitness parameters are essential.
  • Knowledge of microbial meta-genomics, tissue culture of monocots, and statistic and biometrics procedures used in biological sciences research are highly desirable.
  • Candidate should have strong written and spoken English, excellent organizational and problem solving skills as well as computer literacy in MS Office.
  • As the position requires 20% field work candidate should be prepared to work in field even during hot, dry and wet weather.
Terms of Appointment
This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position, whose initial contract will be for a two (2) year term.
Job level and salary
This position is job Grade 2C, level 2 with a starting gross salary of KES 116,417 per month. This is exclusive of other benefits provided by ILRI.

Responsibilities
  • Laboratory waste management: – Routine collection and disposal of laboratory generated waste. Maintaining  accurate daily data of all waste collected, Collection of waste from the transgenic laboratory in the plant facilities; Transfer of Collected waste to the laboratory services unit for disposal;
  • Management of Laboratory Glassware: Collecting dirty glassware from the laboratories to the laboratory services unit for cleaning, sterilizing, drying and wrapping all the glassware for re-distribution to the laboratories; Monitoring and replenishing glassware cabinets in the laboratories
  • Laboratory supplies: Coordination with the procurement officer to assist in sorting of laboratory supplies and delivering to users within the labs;
  • Routine cleaning of laboratory floors, corridors, wash rooms and freezer rooms;
  • Scheduled cleaning of internal and external laboratory windows and other surfaces;
  • Cleaning  of sensitive laboratory areas, such as tissue culture and radio-active laboratories;
  • Laundry- garments.: Collection and transfer of all dirty laboratory coats and other protective clothing to the laundry unit; Washing, ironing of the garments; re-distribution of the clean garments to respective laboratory units;
  • Office assistant duties: occasional assistance with messegerial duties as allocated within the BecA hub offices.
  • General duties within the plant growth facility.

Responsibilities
  • Contribute to ReSAKSS’ analytical work based on regional priorities in agriculture and rural development. Areas of research may include regional trade analysis, food security research, agricultural investment analysis, agricultural investment modeling and other related areas
  • Contribute to synthesis of studies and literature around topical issues affecting agriculture and rural development in the region to generate policy relevant messages
  • Participate in the communication of ReSAKSS’ work, e.g. through preparation of ReSAKSS publications such as working papers,  policy briefs, technical reports, journal publications, conference papers, posters, brochures and presentations at various policy forums
  • Contribute to the capacity building component of ReSAKSS including organizing and implementing policy relevant training for ReSAKSS’ stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of CAADP indicators  in the COMESA region especially tracking changes in volume and value of intra-regional trade in staple commodities and agricultural inputs in the COMESA region
  • Contribute to the organization of conferences, seminars, and workshops organized or co-organized by ReSAKSS
Requirements
  • A Bachelor’s degree with 3 years’ experience in Agricultural Economics, Economics or other related field with application to agriculture and rural development
  • Experience in econometrics and other forms of quantitative analysis, demonstrated in appropriate written outputs; conducting literature searches and writing professional papers; working in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams in a developing country setting
  • Knowledge and experience in agricultural and rural development issues in Sub Saharan Africa
  • Applied knowledge of quantitative analytical methods ; proven experience in  database management and analyzing large datasets to answer analytical questions
  • Proficiency in using MS Office and statistical packages
  • Demonstrated ability to draft high-quality analytical and policy documents and related correspondence
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize a large body of knowledge into simple, easy to understand papers and policy briefs
  • Demonstrated good organizational skills and ability to work with a minimum of supervision

The Technical Support Coordinator shall be dedicated to addressing issues raised by users in term of usability related to data management and Breeding Management System tools and services, as well as  data analysis and interpretation. The Technical Support Coordinator shall provide feedback to user questions and requests in a very timely manner (preferably within the same working day but at a maximum within 2 working days), communicate with users via email or web-based means such as Skype, or visit them in their offices if they are in the same location. The Technical Support Coordinator should conduct visits to Integrated Breeding platform (IBP) users outside the Hub Institute when necessary.

  • Acts as a point of contact for crop breeders within the region in providing technical backstopping in the use of the Integrated Breeding platform (IBP) Manager software and associated services (this includes data transfer as well as facilitating access to services such as genotyping);
  • Provides support on data analysis methodology and result interpretation;
  • Contributes, under the leadership of the Capacity Building Coordinator, to the training and support for a broader adoption and use of the IBP-Manager in the overall breeding programme of the Host Institute and in the region;

This position would be part of the team developing, piloting, assessing the impact of, and scaling-up index-based livestock insurance IBLI products.  A comprehensive pilot has already been commercially launched in Marsabit county of Northern  Kenya and Borana Zone of Southern Ethiopia.  In executing its agenda, the IBLI project (www.ilri.org/ibli) works with an array of commercial, NGO, governmental, academic and donor partners.  We seek a well-rounded, experienced individual within the team to play a central project management role: supporting implementation activities of the team; managing project budgets; contributing to project reporting; managing communication and publicity among others.

Responsibilities
1.      Partnership and stakeholder engagement:
  • With the support of the program team and key partners, contribute to the market development and capacity building strategy in Mandera, Garissa, Wajir, Marsabit & Isiolo;
  • Support in liaison with local government partners to promote their support and adoption of IBLI;
  • Assist in coordinating partnerships that add both programmatic and strategic value to the implementation agenda and help achieve program objectives;
  • Support in enhancing institutions for more cost-effective delivery of IBLI services (sales provision, information dissemination, extension and indemnity payments) and building their capacity.
  • 2.      Capacity Development:
  • Organize and facilitate training programs and the development of training materials (lesson plans, manuals, PPTs and Prezis, ToT materials, individual and group face-to-face training activities, scripts for multimedia products, etc.) adapted to the specific needs of each location;
  • Support team members and partners in coordinating and delivering of capacity development programs as needed;
  • 3.      Project implementation support:
  • Oversee the planning and actual implementation of the project in the field;
  • Support delivery channels and link them to the IBLI ICT based transactions platform;
  • Support the commercial partners in the development of marketing and publicity materials, sales plans, etc.;
  • Contribute to the development of project reports for donors and other partners;
  • Contribute to the development of proposals to advance the teams agenda.
Requirements
•    A Master’s degree in a development-related Social Sciences, Business Administration, Education, Communication or related fields;
•    At least 5 years’ experience in the disciplinary area, e.g., international development / market development / sales & marketing / insurance   – with experience working in arid and semi-arid areas.
•    Demonstrated ability to develop and rally complex partnerships around a common objective, and managing the deployment and assessment of innovative programs, especially with regard to the Kenyan and Ethiopian government.
•    A proven skill-set in the area of outreach and extension development of learning courses, training and technical assistance materials, needs assessments, and other capacity development products.
•    Excellent organizational, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills in English and Kiswahili.
  • Ability to speak Somali and/or Boran would be an added advantage.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate training sessions and make presentations to diverse audiences.
  • Relevant publication record would be an added advantage
•    Familiarity with aspects of livestock production, and/or agricultural systems in developing countries a plus.
Terms of appointment:
This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) positions based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus and is for a six months contract period.
Job level and salary:
This position is job level 3A with a starting salary of KES173,617 per month. This is exclusive of other benefits provided within ILRI’s National Recruited Staff Scheme.

ILRI Vacancy: Spatial Analyst (Closing 12 March 2014)

ILRI seeks to recruit a spatial analyst to contribute to research within its Livestock Systems and Environment (LSE) Program.  The LSE program contributes to the CGIAR Research Programs on Dryland Systems (DS), Humidtropics (HT), Livestock and Fish (L&F), Water, Land and Ecosystems (WLE), and Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS). 
The LSE program applies an integrated systems approach to analyze the interactions between livestock rearing, livelihoods, food security and the environment at a range of scales and across various agro-ecological zones. The research aims to reveal synergies and trade-offs between livestock production, cropping and agroforestry production, natural resource use and environmental impacts. Current research includes work on vulnerability and adaptation to climate change, opportunities to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions from livestock production, livestock interactions with water and nutrient cycles, and dynamic modeling of farming systems. A cornerstone of the program’s work is combining empirical and modeling approaches with qualitative methods. The LSE program collaborates closely with other scientific and development groups within and outside the CGIAR.
The spatial analyst will lead work on defining targets for different livestock value chains in the Livestock and Fish CGIAR Research Program that ILRI leads; this includes assessing the environmental impacts of different interventions, like productivity improvements and out scaling, and developing analytical methods for appropriately targeting livestock interventions. The researcher will define development domains using a number of spatial variables such as agro-ecological zones, human and livestock population, livestock system distribution and market access. The analyst will use a similar approach to define vulnerability domains to shocks such as climate change, disease risk, etc.  The work will also include a range of characterization exercises on livestock production systems.

  • Define and map development domains for livestock value chains and system interventions, climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies.

  • Map the output of modeling exercises, including future scenarios for livestock systems.
  • Represent ILRI in the CGIAR Spatial Information Consortium.

Requirements
  • Ph.D. in environmental sciences, geography, or a related field with three years of post-graduate experience; or an M.Sc. and five years of post-graduate experience.
  • Substantial hands-on experience using GIS tools and spatial data bases.
  • A strong background in statistical methods is an advantage.
  • Good publications record with strong written and oral communication skills in English and the ability to communicate with diverse audiences.

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Team Leader, Animal Health to lead a small team undertaking research on animal health and delivery of animal health services. The research is focused on a) assessment of epidemiological, institutional and policy constraints to improve animal health for increased productivity in small-holder and pastoral livestock systems in developing countries, b) identification and testing of interventions to improve animal health and c) delivery of animal health services.  The post reports to the Program Leader for Animal Science for Sustainable Productivity (ASSP). The ASSP Program conducts research on animal feeding, breeding and health to increase livestock productivity to increase the supply of meat and milk and to increase the income of small-holder livestock farmers. Our work focuses on increasing the supply and quality of animal feed from forage and crop residues, developing animal breeding strategies that are suitable for small scale farmers and promotion of animal health through improved management practices and control of specific diseases. Responsibilities:
  • Conducting research on animal health in livestock systems in developing countries, including identification of animal health constraints through field surveys, participatory methods and diagnostics, field testing interventions to improve animal health and developing and testing models of delivery of animal health services.
  • Leading and managing a multi-locational animal health research team, including leading the conceptual development of research projects and being responsible for planning and implementing research
  • Building collaboration with other research teams in ILRI, including those working on food safety and zoonoses, animal breeding, animal feeding, genomics, and diagnostics and vaccines

The position: ILRI is recruiting an ICT Customer Services Technician position to represent the primary customer interface for ICT customer service, help desk and technical support functions on the Addis Ababa campus. The position is central to ensuring the efficient use of ICT equipment, applications and other resources on the campuses through the resolution of problems and passing-on of their knowledge and experience.
Main Duties:
  • Diagnoses and resolves service requests from the Ethiopia campus that have been assigned to the technician as soon as possible but definitely within the time frame set by the priority level. Keep the helpdesk status up-to-date and communicates regularly with the requester to keep them informed of the status. Close the call as soon as the problem has been resolved to the satisfaction of the customer. Escalate any problems that cannot be resolved to the ICT Customer Services Officer.
  • In the absence of the Help Desk Administrator, manages the help desk functions. This includes logging all ICT service requests, assigning the correct priority level, category, type and the appropriate ICT staff or service provider to carry out the request.
  • Uses the Help Desk reports to identify commonly recurring requests for assistance and provide advice on how these can be prevented or minimised, through training, user awareness or changes in configuration.
  • Configuration and roll-out of new equipment and applications to computers on the network.
  • Carries out research into more effective ways of using and configuring applications that can then be rolled out across the campuses or posted to the intranet and communicated to staff for their use
  • Provides “tips of the week” that will help staff work more efficiently or provides them with options when working with commonly used applications.
  • Keeps the inventory of equipment up-to-date following the written procedures.  This is used in the recharges of ICT services, for the maintenance and service contract, warranty claims and in the replacement plan for identifying the need for new equipment.
  • Assists in the training of students attached to the ICT Department.
  • Under the guidance of the ICT Customer Services manager, participates as required in ICT customer services projects that are implemented by the ICT Customer Services team

Main Duties:

  • Provides specialized support for one or more non-core applications that the customers have asked the Department to help support.
  • Take over the resolution of problems that have been escalated by the ICT Customer Service technicians when they have been unable to resolve a problem within the assigned timeframe.
  • Leads ICT projects that are implemented by the ICT Customer Service team, including the roll-out of new applications and equipment.
  • Provides the main link between ICT Customer Service team and the Infrastructure team to ensure that essential tasks are carried out and do not fall between the two teams.

ILRI Vacancy: ILRI Graduate Fellowship call for applications for PhD Fellow – Africa RISING project in Tanzania (Closing 28 February 2014)

The graduate fellowship placement will be within the Africa RISING ‘Transforming Key Production Systems: Maize Mixed East and Southern Africa’. Under the sub-project: Value chain analysis of grain legumes in eastern and southern Africa: Improving productivity of indigenous chicken through better nutrition and management in mixed crop-livestock farming systems, which is a collaborative effort between International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA). 
This fellowship focuses on the role of indigenous poultry in integrated farming systems in Babati district. Indigenous poultry production is an integral part of a balanced farming system and has a unique position in the rural household economy, supplying high quality protein to the family. Indigenous poultry has potential to convert locally available feed resources that consists of household waste, edible materials found in the immediate environment and waste grain supplements provided by the women into eggs and meat. Income from indigenous poultry forms an effective means of transferring wealth from the high-income urban consumers to the poor rural and peri-urban members of the community hence contributing to the focus of livestock and fish CRP of providing meat and milk for and by the poor. However, village poultry production is faced with many problems including poor feeds, high mortality rates due to lack of vaccination and disease control measures and a need for more knowledge on these topics. The overall objective of the student project is to develop integrated feeding and management strategies that would help to increase the overall productivity of rural poultry production in Babati district of Tanzania.

Responsibilities:
  • To identify value chain actors, characterize and quantify different poultry production and management systems of Babati district.
  • To identify, characterise and quantify different and potential scavenging feed resources and study the constraints to the availability of these feed resources for rural poultry in the free range system of Babati district.
  • To formulate and test poultry feed rations based on nutritional requirements of indigenous chickens and study the effects of supplementation with these rations on growth and egg production in the free-range systems of Babati district.
Essential Skills and Qualifications:
  • Possess at least an MSc in Animal Science, Animal Production or Animal health with a strong animal husbandry background
  • Have at least 3 (three) years working experience in related fields
  • The project aims to enhance capacity building in Tanzania and therefore the prospective candidate should be a Tanzanian national who will be registered in a Tanzanian University

Project: Transforming Key Production Systems: Maize Mixed East and Southern Africa. Terms of appointment and stipend:
The successful candidate will be co-supervised by a senior ILRI scientist working within the project and their affiliate university supervisor.  Responsibilities:
 Help assess the environmental and ecological impacts, particularly with regards to GHGs and short-lived climate pollutants (SLCP) of different manure management strategies
  • Actively seek out new and support existing collaboration efforts studying and promoting mitigation of GHG and SLCP emissions from livestock and manure management.
  • Summarize existing knowledge and government policy on manure management in Africa.
  • Actively promote and aid extension services to disseminate information on effective manure management to stakeholders.
  • Co-ordinate ILRI’s engagement in the Innovation Lab on Small-scale Irrigation including:
    • Developing and testing options for using small-scale irrigation to increase forage supply for livestock
    • Engaging with other CGIAR partners and national stakeholders to ensure an integrated approach to forage development with possibilities for scaling out
    • Working with modelling partners on populating the Texas A&M Integrated Decision Support System with livestock data to allow its use in Ethiopia
  • Support proposal-writing efforts on the above topics.
 Requirements:
  • A PhD in livestock science or natural resource management, ideally with some knowledge of combining research on social science and biophysical perspectives.
  • Minimum of two years post-doctoral experience.
  • Knowledge of manure management and the potential costs/benefits in the context of pastoral/agro pastoral and smallholder systems in developing countries.
  • Good facilitation and organization skills, including strong networking skills.
  • Experience in collection and analysis of data in smallholder systems in the developing world
  • Good publications record with strong written and oral communication skills in English and the ability to communicate with diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams in developing country environments.

  • Responsible for safe transport of staff, guests and materials assigned to him/her;

The position: ILRI seeks a qualified Administrative Assistant – Ethiopia to provide project administrative support to N2Africa and Africa RISING activities in Ethiopia. The Administrative Assistant works very closely with the teams of the N2Africa and Africa RISING projects.
The successful candidate will report to the Programme Management Officer for the Animal Science for Sustainable Productivity Programme of ILRI.
More specifically the Administrative Assistant will, in liaison with the Project Management team:
  • Manages, reviews and responds to the internal and external communication flow – drafting correspondence and responding to queries.
  • Maintaining and updating of collaborators’ address lists and preparing distribution of materials to regions or in response to specific enquiries.
  • Recording monthly attendance of full time consultants and temporary staff

ILRI seeks to recruit a Monitoring, Learning and Evaluation Scientist to contribute to Monitoring, Learning and Evaluation activities in the framework of the 2nd Phase of the East Africa Dairy Development (EADD 2) project with a focus on collecting, analysing and dissemination lessons learned through the EADD2 MLE activities, at farm and hubs levels. The person will also provide farm level economic assessment skills and data collection inputs for the Innovation Lab on Small-Scale Irrigation (ILSSI) project for the remaining of his/her time. The position reports to the Senior scientist and supervises three Research technicians in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania working in the EADD project.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead ILRI contribution to EADD2 project, in particular in related to site selection, monitoring of outputs and outcomes at farm and hub levels and documentation of lessons learned.
  • Be the ILRI contact person with EADD partners, in terms of research findings and general communication
  • Conduct economic analysis of proposed small-scale irrigation and forage intervention options for ILSSI project in different locations including assessing competitiveness with other land and labour use options.
  • Contribute to development and application of targeting framework for small scale irrigation options under ILSSI project
  • Liaise with ILSSI project team in incorporating livestock issues into ongoing survey work.
  • Actively work with other ILRI staff and partners to mobilise resources
Requirements:
  • A PhD in agricultural economics, development studies, M&E or related
  • 2 years post-doctoral experience preferred
  • Detailed insight into research methods related to relevant development indicators:
  • quantitative analysis of productivity indicators, livelihood, gender and value chain performance
  • Qualitative assessment of social structures with a special emphasis on information, innovations and institutions.
  • Initiation and support of learning systems to foster and investigate sustainable change
  • Farm level partial budgeting to compare economic costs and benefits of different farm enterprises including use of simple linear models
  • Experience with research and data management for efficient survey implementation, monitoring evaluation and reporting of project activities and outcomes
  • Project management capabilities to supervise, support team members, initiate and strengthen collaborations with a variety of partners
  • Good English language communication skills for various audiences; national partners, policy stakeholders and general public
  • Proven record of scientific publications
  • Familiarity with smallholder mixed farming systems in developing countries with experience in livestock research for development.
Position level: 4C dependent on qualifications and experience.Base salary starting from USD 45,000 per annum depending on skills and experience, with an attractive international benefits package.

Key responsibilities:
1. Program Reporting Administration and Human Resource:
  • Oversees all the Program Administrative functions and directly supervise program Support Staff including performance management, work planning and reviewing of job descriptions.
  • As part of the Program, support the Program leader and team leaders in the preparation of Program institutional reports such as Annual Program performance indicators reports, Board of Directors reports and other adhoc reporting needs.
  • Participate in Program management meetings, serving as management group Secretary and ensuring follow up on action points.
  • Provide leadership and management of all aspects of the Program Administrative Unit ensuring the office systems run efficiently and in a coordinated manner.
  • Reviews Program admin functions, structures and procedure and makes recommendations to the TD for changes, and overseas their implementation.
  • Act as the main link between Integrated Program and Human Resource units and also provide support the Program Leader with staff planning issues.
  • Support the Program Leader, Team Leaders and scientists with national and international staff and international consultants’ recruitment contracts.
  • Maintain updated staff/supervisor list and organization chart.
2. Proposal Development/Resource Mobilization:
  • Support project leaders in proposal development including participating in proposal development meetings, reviewing of technical proposals to ensure compliance with donor proposal development guidelines, overall responsibility of reviewing proposal budgets to ensure compliance with ILRI and donor financial guidelines and collating all supporting documents required (project team curriculum vitae, responding to donor institutional evaluation queries etc).
  • As part of the management team, participate in proposal development meetings internally and with donors during proposal development.
  • Working closely with Team Leader and Program Leader, maintain a database of all proposals being developed and/or submitted to donors including preparing Management committee (MC) and Board of Trustees (BoT) resource mobilization reports.
3. Grant / Partnership Management:
  • On approval of proposals and before submission to finance and legal offices, review of all Program related restricted projects grant agreements to ensure that the donor agreement provisions and/or clauses do not conflict with any ILRI legal and financial policies and that reporting requirements for interim and final financial and technical reports are achievable.
  • Drafting of all project partner sub grant agreements ensuring compliance with specific donor regulations. This includes but not limited to working with different project partners in development of sub grantee budgets, project financial and technical reporting requirement etc.
  • Provide guidance and/or trainings to project partners/sub grantees and ILRI project team on donor and ILRI administrative, legal and financial requirements.
  • Review and confirmation of all consultancy contract requests and staff recruitment position requests prior to approval by Team Leaders and Program Leader and submission to Human Resources office to ensure compliance to ILRI and donor requirements.
  • Review and confirmation of project partners/sub grantees and consultants payment requests before approval by project leaders and submission of payment to finance for processing.
  • Provide support to different project leaders in the implementation of different Program donor funded projects including following up with sub-grantees and project consultants to ensure achievement of contract deliverables.
  • Review of all donor financial reports once prepared by the budget and grants department to ensure that all costs are included and that all donor requirements are adhered to.
  • Work with different ILRI departments including Legal, budgets and grants, resource mobilization to ensure that all Program projects are implemented in line with ILRI and donors legal and financial requirements.
4. Budget development and Management:
  • Preparing of Program annual budgets and subsequent periodic budget revisions in consultation with team leaders, project managers and Program Leader.
  • Working with the Program’s team leaders and in consultation with different project managers in the updating of monthly staff time in line with budget provisions and work plans before submitting to finance for processing of monthly payroll.
  • Review of activity project budgets including workshop, training and/or field activity budgets, prior to approval by project leaders and implementation of the project activities. This is to ensure that the all projects are implemented within the approved budgets and also in line with donor and ILRI financial requirements.
  • Follow up with related project staff and ILRI corporative services team to ensure that all projects are properly closed on completion.
Requirements:
  • Master’s in Business Administration (MBA), Program Management or equivalent Masters Level degree in a related field.
  • At least five (5) years working experience in Project management environment in an international or development organization
  • Professional training in project management
  • Knowledge of administrative and financial management of development programs and/or donor funded projects/programs.
  • Good managerial skills with a high-level of problem solving.
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision.
Terms of appointment:
This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) positions based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus and is for a two year contract period; renewable subject to availability of funds and individual performance. Salary and benefits will be in line with those provided by ILRI.
Job level and salary:
This position is job level 3A and starting salary is KES 181,317 per month. This is exclusive of other benefits provided within ILRI’s National Recruited Staff Scheme.

The Livestock and Irrigation Value-Chains for Ethiopian Smallholders (LIVES) project is an initiative designed by ILRI, IWMI (the International Water Management Institute) and their Ethiopian partners to enhance income and gender equitable wealth creation for smallholders and other value chain actors through increased and sustained market off-take of high-value livestock and irrigated crop commodities. It will design and implement interventions to improve market orientation of semi-commercial farmers for enhanced competitiveness, sustainability and equity in value chains in four regions of Ethiopia.
The positions: ILRI is recruiting Livestock Expert position who will be based in Addis Ababa and who will be a member of the LIVES Project in ILRI-Ethiopia.
MAIN DUTIES:
  • Provides support to regional and zonal staff on market oriented livestock development.
  • Facilitates interactions among the researchers across the four Regions to make their work more effective, fostering collaboration and synergies where possible.
  • Works closely with senior staff to ensure that research and development priorities from the value chain perspective are appropriately reflected and integrated at value chain level;
  • Identifies and agrees with the relevant project and partner staff across the four Regions, their roles in implementing the work plan each year, including specific deliverables and their timing and prepare a consolidated annual program of work and budget to support the agreed activities;
  • Develops and manages strategic partnerships and research collaborations that improve the ability of the team to achieve the agreed outputs and outcomes and coordinate linkages for livestock research with ILRI’s CRP 3.7;
  • Be responsible for developing a livestock research and development plan based on livestock value chain problems and opportunities, in consultation with project staff and partners;
  • Monitors progress in implementing the activities and delivering outputs, and prepares an annual progress report using an agreed upon format;
  • Be responsible for synthesizing and publishing livestock research and development results;
  • Builds capacity and knowledge of service providers in approaches and livestock value chain interventions through formal training courses and on the job trainings;
  • Organizes national livestock value chain learning events with national and international partners
  • Contributes scientific and technical inputs to specific components of the value chain research according to competency and experience;
  • Supervises graduate students at MSc/PhD levels
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education:    
•    A PhD degree in livestock sciences

Experience: 
•    At least 10 years’ experience in livestock research and development
•    Experience in capacity building
•    At least 5 -7 years post-doctoral experience, especially as it relates to the design, implementation and communication of applied livestock research
