the Prior Informed Consent (PIC) Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade aims at
protecting human health and the environment. Its Secretariat is jointly hosted by FAO and UNEP and provides support to countries
to implement the Convention. The UNEP part of the Secretariat is also responsible for the Basel and Stockholm Conventions.
Reporting lines (Supervision)
The Agricultural Officer reports directly to the Senior Officer, i. e. the Team Leader in AGPMR.
Technical Focus
Facilitates information exchange and provides technical input and support to the implementation of the Rotterdam
Convention and the operation of its Secretariat.
Key Results:
Collection and analysis of information, data and statistics and project/meeting services to support programme projects,
products and services
Key Functions
Collects and analyzes relevant technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional and technology related information,
data and/or statistics to support the delivery of programme projects, products and services
Undertakes analysis, provides technical input for plans and reports and edits/revises technical/scientific documents
Participates in the development of improved work methods, tools and systems
Updates databases and web pages.
Participates on multi-disciplinary project/work teams
Collaborates in the development of training tools and materials and the organization of workshops/seminars etc.
Participates in the organization, conduct and follow-up of meetings, consultations and conferences, the
development/production of required materials and the provision of information and assistance to partners
Specific functions
Collects, reviews, and verifies
o Import responses (IR) for pesticides subject to the Prior Informed Consent (PIC) procedure;
o Notifications of final regulatory actions (FRA) to ban or severely restrict pesticides;
o and proposals for severely hazardous pesticide formulations (SHPF);
Prepares the semi-annual PIC Circular including summaries of notifications and proposals, co-ordinates translation into
English, Spanish and French, ensures consistency across language versions, and ensures its publication (CD and web);
Develops indicators for impact assessment and methods for their application.
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING:
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Advanced University Degree in Biological/Environmental Science or a related field
Three years of relevant experience in supporting development and implementation of technical programmes/projects
relevant to pest or pesticide management)
Working knowledge of English, French or Spanish and limited knowledge of one of the other two or Arabic, Chinese,
Russian
Technical Skills
Demonstrated experience in information/data collection, analysis and management including up-dating of databases and
websites in area of pesticides and/or chemicals
Demonstrated skills and experience in providing technical input to plans and reports and in editing/reviewing
technical/scientific documents in the field of multilateral environmental agreements
Knowledge and experience in preparation of training materials and in organising and delivering technical meetings
including online trainings
Knowledge of chemical/pesticide management at the national or international level, including related Conventions
