Consultant Writer/editor

The consultant will be expected to
undertake a comprehensive review of project outputs (e. g. reports, position
papers, methodology for standards development, toolkits for individual needs
assessment etc. ) and provide recommendations for their further development and
publication. The consultant will revise, and edit documents and materials to a
publishable standard.

Additionally, the consultant will
compose (or arrange for an expert to write) an introductory text for each of
the publications. The consultant will also prepare a summary note and/or press
release to each publication that is completed with the view to using this to
reach out to the media.

Based on the documents and
materials already prepared in 2013, the listing below provides a snapshot of
the main publications that are to be prepared:

1. Training and resource
materials,

2. A series of ‘how to’ manuals
on menstrual hygiene management

3. Policy briefs,

4. Briefing notes

5. Reports

6. Research summaries

7. Factsheets

Major Tasks

• Undertake a comprehensive
review of project outputs and make recommendations for their

Further development and
publication,

• Support the coordination of and
facilitate the contributions of project experts and others,

• Facilitate inputs from keys
experts, senior and junior non key experts (through a range of

means, possibly including
interviews) and incorporate their feedback into the content

• Write, edit and finalise
publications – including finalising drafts of publications,

• The consultant will work
closely with graphic designers to develop ideas for graphics and charts that
creatively convey key messages/data in the publications,

• The consultant will also proof
read the texts as they are laid out by the designer.

Perform other related duties as
required.

Deliverables

It is expected that the
consultant will deliver the following publications in ready to print form:

Final text as a Word document,
including table of contents, photo captions and credit information.
Proofreading of design layouts to ensure text and graphics are error free.

After
the draft text is reviewed by the project team, managers and other reviewers at
WSSCC, the consultant will incorporate revisions related to content and/or
language. Where applicable, the text will adhere to WSSCC branding standards
for language and presentation. Final text will be approved by the Advocacy and
Communications Office at WSSCC before it is laid-out and designed for final
print production.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or
equivalent) in development studies, social work, , journalism, international
relations, or related field.

Experience

* Experience: A
minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in
relevant field in private sector company, development organization or UN
entity is required.

* Proven experience
in drafting of different publications, articles and different types of
creative text related to issues concerning development.

* Excellent writing
and editing skills, and experience of presenting complex technical
information in an easily comprehensible way for non-specialist readers.

* Excellent writing
skills in English – full proficient reading, writing and editing.

* Proven track record
of developing high quality publications.

* Ability to be
flexible and respond to changes to text as part of the review and feedback
process.

* Demonstrated
ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.

* Ability to work
both independently and collaboratively with national and international
experts, with minimal direction, supervision and support.

* Strong
interpersonal skills, able to communicate and work with diverse people
that are based at various locations.

Ability to write
fluently and competently in both English and French and fluency.

* Experience in
drafting of different publications, articles and different types of
creative text related to water, sanitation and hygiene.

Desirable:

* Knowledge and
understanding of issues concerning equity and inclusion within the context
of sanitation and hygiene.

Knowledge of UN terms, language and style.

Languages

English oral and written fluency is required for this position. Working knowledge of French or other UN languages desirable.
