Economic Empowerment Intern

This is an unpaid internship.

PURPOSE: The IRC in Baltimore’s Economic Development Program is a new initiative that ties together new and existing efforts to help refugees integrate and thrive in the Baltimore area’s economy. These include: home-buying workshops with a partner organization; bank account enrollments; a matched savings program; and a childcare certification training program. The Economic Development initiative is housed in IRC in Baltimore’s Community Integration Program (CIP), The aim of the CIP is to assist refugees to successfully navigate challenges encountered during the resettlement process and build mutually beneficial relationships with key stakeholders in the communities where refugees are resettled to create a secure, welcoming, and multicultural environment.

The primary focus of the Economic Development Intern will be the coordination of the home-buying workshops. The position will work closely with the IRC IDA Program Assistant and Community Integration Program Manager. Benefits of working with the Community Integration Program include learning about refugees and new cultures, working in a diverse and multi-cultural environment, experience working at an internationally recognized non-profit organization and a first-hand look at how IRC’s programs facilitate the social integration of refugees in Baltimore. Some hours may be dedicated to other CIP initiatives such as immigration and elderly services based on need and availability.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Schedule location and time of home-buying workshops in coordination with Southeast Community Development Corporation.Develop flyers and perform outreach to recruit participants for workshops.Schedule interpreters for workshops and one-on-one counseling sessions.Follow up with workshop participants to schedule one-on-one sessions.Help clients complete applications for the matched grant savings program and credit building financial products.Other duties as needed.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Learn how to marketing new programs to a wide array of language and ethnic groups.Develop a familiarity with programs and services available to assist low-to-moderate income families in buying a home in the Baltimore area.Learn best practices for making “mainstream” services accessible to refugees and limited-English-proficient families.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Completion of an undergraduate degree or current college student  Prior experience working with refugees or immigrantsExperience in office administration

Detail- and process-oriented, ability to multi-task

Highly motivated, organized, and professional Strong interpersonal and communication skillsAbility to work well with a culturally diverse staff and immigration population, willingness to learn about cross-cultural communication and ethnic backgrounds of refugeesWilling to learn about IRC history, philosophy, global work, and local effortsAbility to communicate clearly and effectively in English

TIME COMMITMENT:

This position is for 15 hours to 37.5 hours per week for a minimum of 12 weeks in the spring. (The IRC is open weekdays only; no work is required on weekends.)
