Communication Officer

The Communication Officer will be based in the TRAFFIC China programme office in Beijing, China. The successful candidate is expected to start working from late April 2014.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES:

Plays the leading role in communicating TRAFFIC’s work in China and the wider East Asia region.
Ensures effective communication and liaison at multiple levels: (1) within the WWF/ IUCN/ TRAFFIC network, (2) to principal partners in non-governmental organizations, government agencies, academics, industry, and the donor communities, and (3) to societies at large about the challenges of wildlife trade and solutions to these challenges, based on work done by TRAFFIC.
Co-ordinates bi-annual reporting, project progress reports, preparation and issue of relevant press releases, and reviews of programme effectiveness of TRAFFIC’s work in China.
Updates and maintains contents of TRAFFIC China Programme’s web presence and social media in cooperation with other TRAFFIC staff, and with consultative links to WWF China’s digital coverage.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Regularly reporting on issues highlighted by TRAFFIC, including TRAFFIC work progress, CITES issues, wildlife news through press releases and targeted publications (e. g. , Chinese/English newsletters, and leaflets) and the internet.
Communicating regularly with partners in the WWF and IUCN community, as well as with other NGOs and with TRAFFIC’s donors. This includes (1) informal/formal communication on TRAFFIC’s work in China and East Asia, (2) leading on six-month technical reports to donors in English, (3) overseeing design for communication materials.
Working closely with TRAFFIC’s Global Communications Co-ordinator and Communications Department of WWF CPO to lead implementation of communications and advocacy-related activities under the Campaign, including (but not limited to): communicating for the campaign, localizing and releasing advocacy materials, preparing for and releasing relevant press releases, etc.
In collaboration with other TRAFFIC staff, managing TRAFFIC’s social media presence in China.
In collaboration with other TRAFFIC staff, drafting and delivering communications materials regarding wildlife trade such as brochures and newsletters as necessary.
Ensuring appropriate TRAFFIC clearance procedures are followed with regard to publications and other communication tools coming from TRAFFIC’s work in China and East Asia. This includes aid in preparing English-language versions of Chinese material as well as liaison with programme staff and other TRAFFIC, WWF, and IUCN offices about communications plans for these publications.
Presentation of TRAFFIC’s work on wildlife trade within the broader scope of wildlife conservation, including links with socio-economic development in Asia, and multi-sectoral approaches to dealing with wildlife trade in China and the Asia region.
Conduct any other duties related to the organization and operation of TRAFFIC East Asia and the TRAFFIC Network as identified by the Head of the TRAFFIC China Programme, the Regional Director East&South Asia and the Senior Programme Director for Asia.

REQUIREMENTS:
At least an undergraduate degree in communications, journalism, environmental science or related fields of study.
At least five years of experience in communications, journalism, media, etc. experience in conservation communication is an asset.
Proficient written and spoken Chinese and English.
Creative personality with a willingness to develop targeted messages to a wide range of audiences.
Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work with a multi-cultural global team.
Computer literate, with a knowledge of standard word processing, email and layout software, and a familiarity with social media platforms.
Must be eligible to live and work in China.
